I walked into Village Pets and the first thing that hit me was the pungent smell of urine and feces. Not only that but the immense heat being generated from sporadically thrown "heat lamps" that all of the animals, regardless of type, were subjected to. Yes, even long haired bunnies, gerbils, and small birds.
Looking around you see birds cages stacked on top of each other, almost to the ceiling, with birds inside picking their feathers out due to being malnourished and stressed. No toys for the birds in the cages, no food or water, and only few even had perches.
Next thing I saw was an adult Iguana in a cage smaller than my small dogs crate. He didn't have any of the proper lamps for a reptile and couldn't even move in his cage if he wanted to.
Also, in there was no water.
As I walked around the store the next thing I saw were bunnies in small cages stacked on top of each other with no water, no things to chew on, and no food. All of the bunnies looked unkempt with long nails, and I can only assume, since the lack of things to chew on, that their teeth were also uncared for.
The thing the store decided to showcase was their two boa constrictors which were full size. They were kept in cubicles (no larger than your standard moving box) where they couldn't stretch out to 1/6 of their original size. The cubicle had none of the right lights and had only a tiny tub of water they could hardly fit in.
Next to those cubicles, were more snakes, which you couldn't see, because they were being kept in locked containers the size of an arts and crafts organizing container. So small that you could only imagine pencils and small things that aren't living should be in.
My next stop in the store was the gerbil cages. Inside the cages were underweight gerbils (both male and females thrown in the same cage) standing on what looked to be 3 inches of bedding with feces caked in it.
The most disturbing thing was the lack of food or water container. Gerbils and rats simply don't eat once a day.
You leave food out for them.
Once again, there was nothing for the gerbils or rats to chew on in order to provide proper treatment and maintenance of their teeth.
I've never been as disgusted as I am now,
How that store is open baffles me.
I will do something about this.
Animals besides cats and dogs matter.
Reptiles, amphibians, and small animals are animals too.

We walked into Village Pets and were immediately helped by the guy around the counter. He was kind enough to let my children hold some of the bearded dragons and we have since made up our mind to buy one of the babies. I think that the pet shop has been slandered. It is a very clean shop, and let's face it, any animal shop is going to have a smell.

As soon as you walk in your senses are assaulted by the odor so if you have allergies or a sensitive nose think twice. Followed by that is the manager or possibly owner Corey having a willingness to lie or omit information, in our case he did both by lying about their return policy and omitting that the cockatoo was aggressive then claiming he did inform us of these things. Add to this his complacency if not downright disregard for the potential safety of the rest of my family and other pets.

They used to be really bad, but after getting shut down and reopening, they have gotten much better at caring for the animals and keeping everything pretty clean. They have also increased their stock of pet supplies, such as cages, supplements, decorations, etc.

This is a nice (apparently) family owned and operated pet store. I was impressed to see their selection of snakes... They have anything from green tree pythons and rainbow boas to anacondas and rock pythons! Very nice.
