When people catch their first glimpse of the famous Harvey Jackson rendered Gillette, Wyoming, “Downtown Cowboy Mural,” chances are they would never guess the artist resides right in the midst of that small town. While the murals that have made him famous loom larger than life, Harvey has managed to maintain the humbleness and neighborly genteelness of his small-town roots. In fact, he frequently brings the local community together to assist him in his artistic endeavors.

Since taking first place in Germany’s prestigious Oskar’s Contest in 1994, Harvey’s designs have gone on to garner the attention of the local and national media. His most recent commission, the "Campbell County Industry Mural" is currently commanding the attention of some of the world’s most recognized media conglomerates. Measuring in at almost two times the size of Mount Rushmore, this impressive warehouse overlay earns distinction as the largest mural in the nation…and quite possibly the world.

But murals aren’t the only artistic innovation in which Harvey is making a name for himself. Drawing from his Fine Art training at the University of Wyoming and the Art Institute of Colorado, Harvey is also performing some of today’s most cutting-edge fine art techniques in medium and process of rusting steel.

Harvey Jackson is continuously experimenting with and applying the most innovative techniques. First garnering esteem with his illusion-esque Acrylic on aluminum, he has recently continued his much-talked-about foray into an additional metal: steel. The controlled oxidation and weatherizing technique is mesmerizing its surveyors with never-before-seen innovation. Once oxidized, the resulting prism-like rusted images wow the eye. Whether manipulating steel, copper, aluminum or iron, Harvey Jackson’s fine art style is aggressive, extreme and contemporary, with a blend of realistic renderings and abstract flavor. For Jackson, it’s all about the process and details, which he renders with emotion.

Harvey is now combining the talent of large scale thinking with the innovative rusting technique. He is now doing large rusted murals that start out as a large wall of raw steel and is then turned into an innovative piece of massive fine art. Each rusted steel piece is unique in the fact that the rust does its own thing, mimicking the characteristics of watercolor while exploding with myriad colors. From vibrant reds to deep browns, this weathering process reveals the entire gamut of earth tones. The rendering resembles marble yet has a unique personality only rust can create.

A self-proclaimed “creatologist,” Harvey Jackson strives for uniqueness. It’s precisely this artistic freshness that solidly positions him as a creative.
