Welcome To Our FamilyBrookside Veterinary hospital was founded by Dr. Lisa Woods-Zabari in 1994 and in our current building since 2000. She raised her son as a single parent, practiced veterinary medicine, and ran the business of the hospital since its inception. She is dedicated to caring for the well-being of pets in Gig Harbor, Key Peninsula, and surrounding areas for nearly three decades. Recently, Dr. Lisa was ready to step back from ownership but wanted to ensure what she had built stayed locally owned to continue to serve the community as she had been. She was introduced to Dr. Zingsheim-Nadeau (Dr. Z) and her husband Michael who were eager to help keep the hospital locally owned and operated.

DANGER ALERT***

If you value your pet's lives do not take them to 'Brookside Vet' because they are inept and unprofessional. I brought my dog in on an emergency basis, for she was in death throes. They made my mom and I wait 35 minutes before they brought us in a room, as they did not deem our dogs obvious distress as an emergency. Our dogs tongue was turning purple and lolling from the side of her mouth, still not get a reation. Our dog died in our arms, I opened the door and told the vet she was dead, she ripped her out of my arms without asking me if I wanted to recessertate her. While she was oxygen, the oxygen tank had run out of air. Instead of immediately taking her in room and giving her a sedative to make her last hour comfortable they let her suffer needlessly. While this was going on they felt it was more important to refill medication to another patient, or they were just talking and gossiping, outside the room they had put us in. And to top off this whole awful experience they charged us over $360 to revive our dog and then euthinize our dog, all without asking us permission in the first place. So if you want to be overcharged by Brookside vet and the hacks they have working for them, keep going to them.

As far as I am concerned we are screwed living on the Key Peninsula, we are over charged and our vets will not see our pets on an emergency basis. We have to either cross the bridge into Tacoma or go to Silverdale. So if you have a sick animal, go to Tacoma or Port Orchard, don't support Brookside Vet, unless you want to be overcharged and have inept vets and staff working on your beloved pets.

I certainly can understand when we lose a loved one how emotional it can be and due to these high emotions how one might misinterprete or misunderstand the turn of events. In regards to the above incident, the actual events of what took place are far different then what has been portrayed. When this little dog arrived at our hospital, the receptionist was told that the dog had an episode of turning blue earlier with the owner. A liscensed vet tech came out immediately as the doctor was still with another client. The tech assessed the current status of the patient and found her to be stable, not blue, but panting with her gum color at that time a normal pink. The owner and patient were escorted immediately to the exam room to wait for the doctor and be out of the busy waiting room. As the owner was waiting for the doctor, who was finishing the previous case, the dog had another episode of respritory distress. As soon as the client told the tech and the doctor the dog was in distress, they immediately took the little dog to the treatment area, intubated her and placed her on oxygen. It is untrue that they ran out of oxygen during this time. In fact, an IV cathetar was placed to give the dog a sedative so she would not be in distress and would tolerate the tube in her throat which was giving her the oxygen. The doctor was able to stabilize her and then discuss with the owner what was happening and get her permission for X- rays. The owner agreed and chest films were taken which revealed fluid in her chest/lungs and around her heart. The owner was told of the findings and offered transfer to a 24 hour care facility where they have ultrasound to be able to better view the cardiovascular problem and possibly help treat her. The owner was warned of the risks of transfer due to the unstability of the ongoing problems and the owner declined transfer saying since the dog was old anyway they would elect euthanasia. All during the time the discussions were occuring with the owner, the little dog was kept sedated and on oxygen. When the owner elected euthanasia, while the dog was sedated and comfortable, the euthanasia solution was put through the IV cathetar that was already in place. The owner was allowed, per her request, to hold the dog as the euthansia was performed. The dog passed away peacefully and did not suffer in the least since she was already sedated. As per the costs incurred, there was an emergency CPR/exam, oxygen therapy, IV cathetar, multiple x- rays, and the cost of the euthanasia solution. Given the hard work of the staff and the doctor to try and stabilize this little dog with a long term life threatening problem-the costs of this emergency procedure was not unreasonable. Unfortunately as in human medicine, we are not always able to save every patient altho' we always due our best. We are a loving and caring staff. We treat every patient as if they belonged to us. Sometimes medicine occurs rapidly and things seem hectic altho' they are still in control. To a grieving owner it may seem confusing but the negative language to describe what took place was far from the truth.

We have been going to this clinic for over ten years now and have always received the best care! Our first dog, an American Bulldog, was a rescue and in his first year in our care, it was found that he had arthritis in his left leg. Over the course of 9 years, Brookside Vet continually gave him the best treatments available and made his 9 1/2 years of living, the best possible. When he passed, the compassion for him and us, displayed by the staff and Dr. of Brookside was overwhelming. Dr. Woods was on call at the time and she stayed with our sweet Diesel, as well as a tech and my husband, as he slipped away. The doctor and the tech cried as he took his last breath. A few weeks later, they sent us a beautiful card, signed by all the staff as well as a plaque they made with Diesel's paw print pressed into the clay. You cannot miss their love for each animal they treat. We saw them once at a dog fair and Diesel knew them immediately and had to go over to see them. This is no ordinary clinic. I highly recommend them!

Money is More Important

I have 6 pet and been going to this clinic since I moved here. My cat got sick (organ failure) and was in so much pain he was sleeping in his litter box so he didn't have to move. I called to ask "How much to euthinize him." I then asked if I "Could pay half now and half next week". I was told payments are due at time of service. I said "But he is suffering", "Sorry but all payments are due at time of service". So I guess the all mighty dollar is worth more then the pain and suffering of an animal. Oh, and if you want to be with your pet while he is being euthanized it's an extra $30, if you let them take him in back it's free, what are they doing in back that they need to hide?

brookvet11 - 04/13/10 It is very sad that during this stressful situation, the owner misinterpreted the facts. Unfortunately in this day and age hospitals have to set procedures and be consistent. There have been times in the past when chances were taken to allow someone to "make payments" and 99 times out of a 100 people didn't stick to their word, especially if the animal was deceased. We offer care credit which is 90 days same as cash as well as we take most major credit cards. Owning pets are a responsibility, not a right and the responsibility of taking care of that animal falls on the owner, not the veterinarian. If the cat was suffering, it should have been seen sooner. We offer IV cathater placement (thus the extra $30) when the owner wants to be present, so they can snuggle and hold their animal close while still allowing us to acess the vein easily. On debilitated animals it can be very difficult to even hit a vein, so when we know how emotional this is for the owners we want to make the passing as gentle and caring as possible thus the IV cathetar. Many times a tranqulizer will be given prior to ease in the passing whether the owner is present or not. When the owner doesn't want to be present, we still treat the patient with love and care and respect, for we all have had our own personal animal need help with their passing. We don't place a cathertar then because we have trained staff that can help isolate the vein and place the animal in an appropriate position to dispense the medicine into the vein. Our hospital have recieved many "thank you's" and letters of appreciation over the years especially when dealing with end of life issues and the difficult decision to euthanize. The letter above in no way reflects the good reputation our hospital has and really just comes down to the issue of money and not the care they recieve.

compasionate care

I have been taking my lab to Brookside for over 7 years and I find they are always kind, courteous and very loving to my pet. My dog actually loves going there. I have always been confronted with costs upfront. I did have an older cocker spaniel that was very ill and they always saw her when she was sick. When the office is closed and you do have an emergency, we do have to cross the bridge to Tacoma for care. I have done that too. Its just the way it is. When my mother has an emergency I also have to cross the bridge to the ER so I dont see why any one would be upset about that. I love Lisa and her staff. If you want your pet to be pampered and loved and get excellent care....this is the place
