Saint Augustine, FL

Located in Saint Johns County, the city of Saint Augustine, Florida is nation's longest continuously inhabited city. According to census data from 2007, Saint Augustine has a population of roughly 12,000 residents.

Rich in history and tradition, Saint Augustine is home to several ethnic cultures. While Caucasians make up the majority of the population, African Americans, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders are also well represented. In recent years, a growing Latino population has also become a presence in the community.

ECONOMY AND INDUSTRIES

The local economy of Saint Augustine is fueled by the hospitality and tourism industries, which take advantage of the city's rich history and heritage. In addition to these two industries, retail and food services also account for a significant portion of the city's businesses. Flagler Hospital serves Saint Augustine and the surrounding communities with state-of-the-art medical treatment.

The Saint Augustine and Saint Johns County Chamber of Commerce provide support to the local business community. The Saint Augustine Convention and Visitor's Bureau provides detailed information concerning local areas of interest, lodging, and recreational activities for visitors to the city and county.

NEIGHBORHOODS AND DISTRICTS

Saint Augustine is known as the Ancient City and the neighborhoods of the city feature historic ambience of cobblestone streets, quaint cafes and bars. Fort Matanzas has long protected the city from enemies approaching from south during colonial wars.

The neighborhoods of Saint Augustine have a housing density of around 670 houses or condos per square mile. About three out of five houses are owner-occupied.

The walkability of Saint Augustine is very good. Most of the places like grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, parks, bookstores and schools are within a mile's distance from the center of the city.

Saint Augustine is served by three noted institutions of higher learning:

The city is also home to the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, which was founded in 1885. Saint Johns County operates a public school system that provides educational opportunities for the children of Saint Augustine.

GETTING AROUND

The Saint Augustine Airport is a noncommercial facility, and is thus not available for passenger transport. Commercial airline services are provided by Jacksonville International, located approximately 50 miles from Saint Augustine, and Daytona Beach International, which is also roughly 50 miles away from the city.

Saint Augustine does not currently operate a municipal public transport system. However, many local hotels and businesses provide transportation to clients and tourists. In addition, public transit services are provided in the city by the Sunshine Bus Company.

Access to the Atlantic Ocean from the city is available via the Saint Augustine Inlet on the Matanzas River.

In addition to being home to a wide range of locally-owned shops, boutiques, and specialty stores, Saint Augustine also offers five major shopping areas:

Two AM and three FM radio stations serve the city, although they are all based in outlying communities. The city of Saint Augustine itself has one local broadcast television station, WQXT, which is part of the A1A television network.
