During the 19th century, New Castle enjoyed great growth, going from a population of 300 to more than 38,000 in just 100 years. The city hit its peak in the 1950s and has decreased in size ever since. Its population has remained stagnant since 1990, with about 28,000 people. The entire city is now undergoing a much-needed period of revitalization, embracing positive change while reminding residents of its remarkable past. Founded in 1798, New Castle had about 150 years of growth and prosperity, and the city now hopes to return to those roots.

Successful industries in New Castle now include retail, manufacturing, service, education and health care. In fact, about 19 percent of employees work in the education, health care and social services industries. Manufacturing and retail services are tied at 13 percent each. About 74 percent of employees work in the private sector, while 12 percent work for the government and about 5 percent work for themselves. These are some of the largest employers in New Castle:
New Castle has approximately 11,703 houses, out of which more than 90 percent are occupied. Of the occupied houses, more than 6,000 are owner-occupied, and renters occupy around 3,700 houses. The city has average house density with around 1371 houses or condominiums per square mile.
With a total area of 8.6 square miles, New Castle is a fairly walkable city. Many restaurants, bars and grocery stores are within a distance of one mile from the center of the city.
Public Transportation: The New Castle Transit Authority is the main bus system, making stops in nearby Pittsburgh several times each day for commuters.
Highways: The most important highways in New Castle are Pennsylvania Route 18, U.S. Route 422 and Pennsylvania Route 60, all of which run through the city. Pennsylvania Route 168 and Pennsylvania Route 108 both pass through the city as well, while U.S. Route 224 and Pennsylvania Route 65 end once they get to New Castle.
Air Travel: This area is served by both New Castle Municipal Airport and the larger Pittsburgh International Airport, which works with airlines such as US Airways, Air Canada, United, JetBlue, Midwest, Continental, AirTran, Delta and American Airways.
McConnell's Mill State Park: This park is known for its fishing, kayaking, rock climbing, hunting, rafting, camping and hiking opportunities for tourists and residents alike. The Historic Grist Mill is located in this park, which is near the scenic Slippery Rock Creek Gorge.
Golf: New Castle is home to many golf courses. Public courses include Sylvan Heights, Castle Hills, Tanglewood and Mohawk Trails. New Castle Country Club is a well-known private course in the area; it features 18 holes, a swimming pool, tennis courts and more.
Moraine State Park: Popular summer activities here include boating, fishing and swimming on the park's 3,225-acre lake, while visitors enjoy sledding, skiing and snowmobiling in the winter.
New Castle Playhouse: This playhouse has been supporting the arts since 1958, hosting several theater productions per year in addition to dance recitals and musical theater performances.
New Castle Parou Ballet Company: Known in the community for both teaching ballet to students and educating the city about dance as an art form, this company has been in New Castle since 1987.
Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts: This arts venue features art galleries, dance studios, classes, music concerts, lectures, programs and exhibits of every kind.
Cascade Center: This was the site of the first Warner Brothers theater in 1907, called the Cascade at the time. The building was set to be torn down in the 1990s but was recently revitalized and reopened. The theater now features a restaurant, and city officials plan to add a film theme to the surrounding area in an effort to remind visitors of the building's history. More restaurants, shops and buildings are slated to be built in the area in the near future.
Back to the '50s Weekend: This car show features thousands of classic vehicles. It's held at Cascade Park each July.
Downtown New Castle: Much of this area is being revitalized in an effort to bring both residents and tourists to it. Plans include adding a fountain, fireworks sculpture and rest area to Zambelli Plaza. The picturesque East Washington Street Bridge is also slated to receive an aesthetic makeover. Additionally, restaurants and stores will be added to the downtown area.
