Kahului is a coastal town located on the island of Maui in Hawaii. As the retail hub of Maui, Kahului boasts several shopping centers and major department stores. With a population of 20,000, the town is home to almost one-third of the island's residents. Due to the large amount of commerce that takes place in Kahului, the town is not a typical tourist destination, as are many other Hawaiian cities. Many shipping vessels line the city's waterfront.
While the average U.S. city gets approximately 37 inches of rain each year, the rainfall total in Kahului is only 19 inches per year. Furthermore, the average number of days with enough precipitation to measure is 62 days per year. The average temperature in July hovers around 84 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average low temperature in January is 64 degrees. Kahului residents can expect to get an average of 273 days of sun each year.
Kahului relies heavily on its retail industry and the travel in and out of Kahului Airport to keep the town prosperous. The city is home to many major shopping malls and stores, including such large chain stores as Wal-Mart and Home Depot.
The unemployment rate in Kahului is generally low, but the cost of living is quite a bit higher than the national average.
