Iowa City is located in Johnson County on the banks of the Iowa River. In 1839 Iowa City was created to become the new capital of the territory of Iowa, but it wasn't named the official capital until 1841. Construction on the capitol building was completed in 1842. Iowa City continued as the capital city of Iowa until 1876, when the state capital was moved to Des Moines. Iowa City continued to prosper, and today it is the fifth-largest city in the state, with a population of about 67,000.
Some of the leading industries in the city are educational, health and social services, retail and accommodation and food services. The unemployment rate of Iowa City is 4.2 percent.
Iowa City enjoys a diverse and prosperous economy. The University of Iowa resides within the city limits and is the city's largest employer. In addition to the university, Iowa City is the home base of operations for ACT, Inc., Moore Wallace North America Inc. and NCS Pearson, Inc. Some other leading employers include Vangent, Inc., Lear Corporation and Systems Unlimited Inc.
Iowa City has several business development programs in place to draw new businesses to the area and to help retain those businesses that currently call the city home. In addition to these programs, the city has wisely set aside land for future development that is suitable for everything from medical research facilities to office buildings.
The city has a population of 67,000 people, of which more than 65,000 are urban. The city accommodates around 26,000 houses with more than 25,000 occupied. Renters occupy around about half of the city's homes.
The Old Capitol Cultural District and Downtown Iowa City houses the tree-lined Pedestrian Plaza and features locally-owned boutiques, a variety of dining options, and street vendors. Art and cultural events take place in this area, including the Friday Night Concert Series, Iowa Arts Festival and Iowa City Jazz Festival. The University of Iowa campus, intertwined with downtown, offers museums and other attractions.
The Bluffwood neighborhood has had limited development because of its rugged landscape and natural access restrictions. However, Bluffwood is home to some homes, the Press Citizen and the ACT campus, which are located along Dodge Street/Highway 1 in the northwest part of the neighborhood. This area is primarily composed of farms with pastures on the rolling hills and some row crops, such as soybeans and alfalfa.
Hunter Heights contains farmland with the north branch of Ralston Creek running diagonally through it. A seven-lot rural subdivision, a few farm residences, and Hi-Point, an 18-hole golf course, are located in this neighborhood.
Lindemann Hills offers a mix of housing types, including an assisted living center for elderly or disabled persons.
Pheasant Hill is fully developed and contains Lemme Elementary School and Pheasant Hill Park.
Hancher Auditorium: Traveling musical groups, dance troupes and theatre companies often perform at Hancher Auditorium.
Hamburg Inn No. 2: Known as a family dining option, Hamburg Inn is also popular with politicians, as many political candidates visit the restaurant. The Hamburg Inn has been featured on The West Wing and has hosted Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, along with many other political hopefuls.
Plum Grove Historic House: This home was once the residence of novelist Eleanor Hoyt Brainerd as well as the first governor of Iowa, Robert Lucas.
Pedestrian Mall: The Pedestrian Mall is more commonly known as Ped Mall or Ped by those familiar with Iowa City. It is favored by students and is active and lively. It is home to summertime events such as the Friday Night Concert Series and the Iowa City Jazz Festival. In addition to many restaurants, bars, shops and hotels, the Iowa City Public Library is also located on the Ped.
Coralville Park and Devonian Fossil Gorge: This area was exposed when the floods of 1993 washed away soil and trees to reveal the 375-million-year-old, Devonian-era seabed that was hidden below.
Museum of Natural History: This museum's displays include a timeline of the area that spans 500 million years, along with exhibits and programs about the local geology and wildlife.
Akar: This specialty store focuses on art, architecture and design products.
Antique Mall of Iowa City: Vendors sell antiques from personal and professional collections.
Fired Up Iowa City: Personalize anything in this ceramics studio, or watch guests create their own gifts. Check out the weekly events for families, kids, singles and couples.
Gypsy Magic: This shop features gifts, clothing and jewelry from all over the world.
Old Capitol Town Center: Part of historic downtown, this mall has local, regional and national retailers.
R.S.V.P.: This store celebrates the art of correspondence with a stunning array of papers, invitations, announcements and greeting cards.
Sycamore Mall: This mall sells everything from sporting goods to pet supplies, electronics to beauty aids, and, of course, clothing and home decor.
The University of Iowa has several college athletic teams that all share the name the Iowa Hawkeyes. The school's sports include football, baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis.
Iowa City has a daily newspaper, the Gazette, which covers 16 counties with an emphasis on Iowa City and nearby Cedar Rapids. The University of Iowa publishes the Daily Iowan, while nearby Kirkwood Community College prints its own newspaper, the Kirkwood Community College Communiqué. The Iowa City Press Citizen is a weekly newspaper.
