Glen Burnie covers about 13 square miles in Anne Arundel County and is located approximately nine miles from Baltimore. The population in Glen Burnie is approximately 40,000. The relatively small town has a big claim to shopping history. The Harundale Mall was the first enclosed shopping center east of the Mississippi River. It was built in 1958 and was one of the first shopping centers officially called a "mall."
Construction, public administration and health care are the most popular industries in Glen Burnie. Some of the city's largest employers include the Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Tate Automotive Group and R.E. Michel Co. Inc. Other major employers are Glen Burnie Bancorp and North Arundel Hospital, which recently joined the University of Maryland Medical System.
The area has a very active Chamber of Commerce, which was established in 1947. It was originally known as the Glen Burnie Chamber. The Chamber took a heavy legislative role, bringing legislative issues to attention in Annapolis and securing improvements such as new streets and traffic lights. In 1983, the Chamber became the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce and extended its reach outside Glen Burnie.
