Our 11 year old daughter began reading prior to kindergarten. However, as time progressed her reading skills did not improve. She was reading slowly and lacked fluency. In order to keep pace with her peers she would skip or guess at words. At the beginning of her fifth grade year her struggles intensified. Our daughter’s reading grades dropped, and we had many stressful and tearful nights with homework. Tutoring from a favorite teacher at her school helped somewhat. Nonetheless, in order to ensure that our daughter would not lose her love for learning we needed to do something more. We enrolled her at Huntington because we had heard that a similar program had helped other children. As in any investment, it costs something, financially, but also a time commitment. She attended Huntington Learning Center two days a week for two hours each session. Our daughter absolutely loved her tutors! Although, it wasn’t always fun choosing tutoring over swimming with her friends in the summer, it was totally worth the investment. Our daughter’s confidence, as well as, reading skill has sores! She started a new middle school this past fall. She couldn’t wait to take her first all “A” report card back to her former tutors at Huntington! They celebrated her achievements as if she was the most important person in the world. All the tutors, as well as, the directors made our daughter feel that she could achieve her goals. On her last day at Huntington, my daughter wrote these words, “I walked out of Huntington that day like a different person. Knowing I was ready to conquer the world but first sixth grade!” Her teachers at her new middle school were surprised to hear that she had went to tutoring as they commented that she was one of the best readers in her class. My response, “Thanks to Huntington!” And we will be back for SAT prep in a few years!!! See you then!
