Pushing unnecessary surgery

I injured my knee Dec. 2013, and called Midwest Bone & Joint. They booked me as an emergency visit to see Doctor Seeds who ordered tests. I had them done, and was told I would have to schedule a follow up appt. The office scheduled me for a follow up with Dr. Seeds. When I saw him, he said, "I dont' handle this type of work, you will have to see Dr. Palmer" So after wasted time, and co-pay, I set up an appt. with Dr Palmer. I was able to walk into Doc Palmers office, but his exam was brutal and caused extreme pain-making me unable to walk out. He insisted I needed major acl repair, a surgery that would take a year to heal, and require ligament from a cadaver. The office handed me the "codes" to check with insurance, instead of checking themselves, and before I could leave, they started pushing the sale of an expensive leg brace to use after surgery, which I refused, not knowing what was up. The exam and knee manipulation was so brutal, that I was unable to walk out of the office without holding on to the counter. No one offered crutches, or any assistance to help ,me to open doors etc. Afterwards, I got my records, and went to NW hospital in Chicago for a second opinion. NW doctors basically told me they would never do that type of surgery on a man of my age,(over 55) and that it wasn't necessary if I wasn't functioning as a pro athlete. I did need a little cartilage clean up, which was causing some pain and locking of the joint, but not ligament repair at all. After my minor outpatient surgery at NW, I was up and around right away, and my knee is comfortable, pain-free and fully functional to this day. Unfortunately, it seemed Doctor Palmer from Midwest Bone & Joint was not concerned with my well-being, deliberately manipulating my knee to create as much pain as possible, only concerned with booking an unnecessary extensive major surgery for monetary gain. Watch out for this high pressure office, they dig deep into your pocket! And yes, it is always worth getting a second opinion. I like the teaching hospitals where docs are paid as staff, and don't have to schedule unnecessary surgeries to earn their keep, to pay for their private surgical centers.
