“Buenos Dias, Amigo – Pedro is very pleased to have you as a guest.” At least that’s what the billboards say for a hundred miles in each direction north and south on Interstate 95. You can’t miss them.

My kids and I have spent several nights with Pedro at his faux Mexican tourist trap along the interstate on the North Carolina/South Carolina border. I remind them of the “nostalgia” surrounding South of the Border as my parents spent their honeymoon there in 1965. My youngest daughter – all of 8 years old – reminds me that the place has changed since then.

Individual rooms each with its own carport. Spacious enough but lacking in comfortable accommodations. Bathrooms were old style with bright colored 6” x 6” type ceramic tiles that are probably part of the original décor. Water was hot – no complaint from myself or kids when taking a shower. Limited soap/shampoo/toiletry supplies. Beds were comfortable, but with old linen and blankets.

Gas stations, beach, ice cream and souvenir shops, restaurants, a bar, rides – that didn’t appear open or operable – fireworks, an observation deck, and a convenience store can be found at South of the Border. Built in 1949, this place has certainly seen better days. As soon as you enter I-95 heading north, you’re in the state of North Carolina.

Checking out? Don’t forget to return your room key or there will be a $5.00 charge added to your credit card. A “reminder” sign is prominently posted at the front desk. Very limited interaction with motel staff – check in/out only. Polite on each of those occasions. Don’t forget to pick up a hand full of free South of the Border postcards and bumper stickers while checking in/out. If you forget, they are .10 - .25 at the gift shop.

South of the Border is a great place to stop for photos and the “nostalgia” of years long past, but that’s all. Been there – done that – stopped at South of the Border. Long lost are the glory days of this interstate 95 tourist trap.
