I visited McLean Family Dental for the first time today after reading a review that gave it 5 stars. A close friend of mine said she did not care for the dentist, but I like to give the benefit of the doubt. The red flag should have been that they can get you in the same or next day for a general cleaning. That doesn't usually happen with most "good" dentists.

When I called to make the appointment, I thought they were friendly enough. I explained that I had not been to the dentist in quite a while - 3+ years. Life got busy and with a traveling husband and raising babies, the dentist was difficult to visit. Before that, I was a big fan of the dentist. I brush and floss every day and have never had more than a small cavity and only a few of those in my entire life.

The receptionist seemed welcoming, despite my long absence. I made my appointment Monday and my cleaning was Tuesday morning. I walked in this morning and all seemed fine until the hygienist came to get me. She seemed cold at best, but more irritated. She didn't welcome me warmly, introduce herself, shake my hand or make any kind of small talk. After awkward silence, she finally asked if I had dental insurance, which began about 2 minutes of small talk. From there, she took x-rays. After returning with the films, her demeanor turned from cold to frazzled and exasperated.

Apparently, during my absence from the dentist, I had developed early stage gum disease. I was heartbroken and scared. It was my fault for not making the dentist a priority, but the guilt, shame and fear instilled by this hygienist was horrible. She lamented the whole time about how severe my teeth were, not offering the least bit of hope. She never cleaned my teeth and only worked on one small portion of my mouth..

The clincher is, that the dentist came in for about 5 minutes and took a look in my mouth - No Cavities! She said something about my gums, but it didn't seem to me that she thought it was as bad. And if it was, she should have spent time discussing how to reverse the gum damage and establish a plan to help me get back on track. None of that was done. The only thing that the dentist discussed with me and the hygienist was to replace old fillings in one of my teeth.

After the dentist left, she continued scraping my teeth and complaining. I was in tremendous pain, but nothing was offered to help with that. I guess she felt I deserved it. After she was done scraping, she made sure to show me on the x-ray just how bad my teeth were. By now, I was crying and ashamed. I had to walk out of the office. I told her that I had heard enough and kindly asked her to stop. She replied that most people want to know about their teeth!!!

I called later to complain about how the hygienist treated me, but nothing more was done.

I urge you not to visit here. My insurance company wanted me to file a report as well!
