Columbus, GA

Columbus, Georgia is a large city, situated in the western part of the state along the Alabama border, approximately 2 hours south of Atlanta. Columbus has a population of approximately 186,000 and is the primary city in its metropolitan area.

Located in Muscogee County, it was once the site of a Creek Indian Village. Since its origins as a modern community, the city has been a planned development from its initial settlement along the Chattahoochee River.

One of the most decisive factors in the city's economic and cultural development has been its proximity to the large military installation of Fort Benning, which borders the city along the south and southeast.

The city's historic buildings are located in the center of Columbus. This area of central Columbus has undergone an extensive revitalization and development in the last decade, leading to the creation of a range of new commercial, residential and public buildings within the area.

Uptown Columbus, located along the Chattahoochee River, is the city's main entertainment district. It's home to a variety of unique shops, restaurants, and special events. Most housing options in uptown are apartment buildings and multi-unit complexes.

Two of the most expensive neighborhoods in Columbus are Green Island Hills and the Brookstone. Other neighborhoods include Highland Park and Lynn Hills/Lincoln Hills, which offer more affordable residential dwellings.

The Columbus real estate market also offers a range of apartment, condominium and townhome options. Slightly less than half of the city's residents are renters.

Columbus is home to the Peachtree Mall, which has a plethora of stores and shops. The mall is also home to several major department stores.

For shoppers looking to spend some time outdoors, there are a range of unique boutiques and local shops and galleries located in the downtown Columbus area. This district is also home to talented artisans of all types, who produce such original goods as woodworks, stained glass, and pottery. The downtown also boasts a wide range of antique shops, restaurants, boutiques, and gift shops.

For more shopping centers, residents and visitors can frequent the Cross Country Plaza or the Main Street Village.
