I go to Dental Smart on James Island. I am a true dental Phobe , I bit my 1st dentist (HARD) at 3, was literally tied down to get treatment, I've had panic attacks in the chair, taken Ativan beforehand needed MUCHO nitrous oxide, You get the picture. I also have severe chronic dry mouth (=bad tooth decay)

Michael (he runs the place) deserves a raise, he has been so courteous and kind to me, and, he kept me from running (literally) out the door. Every hygienist that has worked with me (Cassandra, Edna, Monty) absolutely know their jobs, and do it well. Dr. Frankie Bearly, deserves all kind of kudos and compliments for her gentle touch calm, soothing manner, and she absolutely does a steller job. She went above and beyond to keep me comfortable, and, she called me at home later to check on me (!!!!! :) Hey, I didn't even bite her or try to run, even with that horrible drilling noise. I got thru WITHOUT resorting to Ativan or nitrous.

These guys have a patient for life. They deserve to.

RUN as fast as you can!!!! They told me with my insurance it would only be $850 out of pocket for my daughter's braces (including retainers) prior to putting them on, I paid my agreed part and they were supposed to bill my insurance for the balance. My daughter didn't need anything special with her braces and several appointments he just looked in her mouth and did nothing but sure as heck billed us. They screwed up the filing of the claims on our insurance so my insurance didn't pay several claims despite me telling the staff every month to contact my insurance and provide what they needed to pay the claim. Now they are telling me I have to pay the balance. The clinic is nasty, the Dr took off several months for his personal issues (with no back up) and still continued to bill us. My daughter went months without brackets on certain teeth so he could drag out the process and continue to bill for their lack of service. They are not ethical.

I have had previous issues with this office not answering their phone (had to call back 4 times before getting a response and immediately being put on hold), and with receptionists being too busy/distracted, so it took over 15 minutes to schedule an appointment in person. They also never bothered to contact me after I submitted an online request for an appointment. However, today's experience so far has been way worse. I have been waiting for well over an hour, and currently my appointment was an hour and twelve minutes ago. The receptionist told me they have no idea how much longer it will be, that they have several people back there, and that they apparently take walk-ins despite having appointments scheduled soon after the walk-in arrived. They did not tell me at any point that I would have to wait a truly ridiculous amount of time, and there is another man here who has waited at least as long. They have also not been sympathetic to the waste of well over an hour of my time. Unfortunately, I did not read reviews before picking a dentist after moving here and simply picked the closest one, but I would STRONGLY caution anyone reading this to NOT come to Dental Smart West Ashley.

Dental Smart is committing fraud if you were one of the unlucky ones that paid $1000.00 to get unlimited dental work for a year. Now they say they will not honor that contract, and you can only get whatever was listed on your account. Contact the Office of the Attorney General at www.scattorneygeneral.org or South Carolina Dept of Consumer Affairs at www.scconsumer.gov or 1-800-922-1594. The South Carolina Better Business Bureau is [email protected] or 803-254-2525 or complain about this unethical business practice. Stay away if you are looking for a good dentist.

I haven't ever gotten on the internet to write a review like this but I want people to know about how horrible this place is. I started going here March 11, 2013 and got a cleaning and had to get a crown put on with a possibility of a root canal if the tooth still hurts. A few days later I got the crown temporarily set just to see if my tooth was still bothering me and if that was the case they said I would need a root canal. Well, the crown came out and my tooth was still in HORRIBLE pain. But they said lets just temporarily set it again because maybe it just needed to be adjusted, so I said ok. A week later they crown came out again, so I went back again, and same results. Temporarily set because they still didn't "know" if I needed a root canal. A few days later the crown came out AGAIN! So I took it upon myself to get a second opinion, went to a specialist and they told me I definitely need a root canal, so I went with the specialist and got the root canal. Went back to Dental Smart but instead of the James Island location, I went to the West Ashley one. I only went back to this place because they already have $500 of my money(the cost of the crown). I Had my crown "permanently" set since I had the root canal and this was Friday( 4/5/13) and today 4/10/13 the crown has came off AGAIN! I have called and I am always put on hold for an extremely long time just to be told I would be called back. Still haven't heard back! They do NOT care about the patients. All the want is your money. Not willing to help in any way what so ever. I haven't even received an apology! Customer service is horrible, they talk to you like you're stupid, they LOST my payment paper work at the James Island location and the girl working the front desk rolled her eyes at me when I told her I had a copy of it. The staff yell at eachother across the room. They argue with their patients in front of everyone. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!
