Enrichment program designed to help guide young people.
Description: Volunteers of America, Dakotas' Youth Link is a multi-faceted enrichment program designed to intervene early with young people and guide them toward making healthy choices.
It offers after school and summer activities including homework assistance, recreation, art, character building, and community involvement.
The goals of Youth Link are as follows:
•to increase attendance in school
•to increase performance in school
•to increase social skills
•to increase organizational skills
•to increase the skills of families in addressing their child's academic and emotional needs
•to involve youth in their community via volunteer service
•to decrease or avoid school office referrals
•to decrease or avoid involvement in the juvenile justice system
Bowden Youth Center:
Volunteers of America's Bowden Youth Center offers education and creative opportunities in a safe, supportive environment as well as recreational activities, and non-competitive sports. Trained counselors are available for youth wanting someone who will listen to their concerns. A variety of educational workshops are offered on subjects such as nutrition, parenting and computer skills.
It also serves as a drop-in center for runaway and homeless youth or youth at risk of becoming homeless. The center offers a safe place for youth to come for a meal and other services needed to stabilize their situation. The center is also a response site for youth in crisis. Young people may come to the center for assistance with situations including family violence, suicide ideations, peer conflicts, and legal difficulty.
A mentor program, using both adults and peers, is available for youth. A nurse is available to youth who have health-related questions or concerns.
Volunteers of America's Bowden Youth Center is operated with and for youth in the Sioux Falls area. A Youth Council works with program staff to develop and implement all programs and activities
New Start Program
Volunteers of America's New Start for Adolescents is a 24-hour residential treatment program for pregnant and parenting adolescents and their children, referred by the Department of Corrections, Social Services, Human Services, Court Services, or the private sector. New Start provides a safe, structured, therapeutic and staff-secured environment.
New Start provides holistic services for pregnant and parenting adolescents to help them lead healthy and productive lives. New Start participants gain insight in the following areas:
Parenting and self care
Individual, couples, and family relationships
Prenatal, postpartum and well baby care
Chemical usage, mental health and legal problems
Educational and employment needs
Volunteers of America provides these comprehensive services to allow participants to gain the skills and resources necessary to live a healthy, satisfying life and to develop positive parenting practices for themselves and their child.
Talk It Out Youth Program:
One of Volunteers of America, Dakotas’ youth involvement programs, Talk It Out, provides an opportunity for young people in the community to help other youth. Talk It Out is a non-crisis, peer helping telephone and e-mail service. The lines are open 4:00 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
Participation is voluntary and at no charge to the young person.
