Are they taking advantage of senior citizens? by fluffy - 09/16/2009After finishing a furnace repair, the technician said he wanted to check one more thing.. Then he said the heating chamber was rusted out on a seam and the entire furnace needed replacing. I asked them to send me an estimate. I was short on money so I picked up a carbon monoxide detector. (Not a recommended alternative.) Now that fall is approaching, I decided it was time to take action. I removed the furnace only to find the heating chamber showed no signs of rust! Looked as good as new. Now I have to spend another three hours reinstalling it, since Whipple refuses to. Was this an anomaly? Makes you wonder how many furnaces are being replaced that don't need to be. (Maybe none... Maybe lots!)My recommendation... if you're told by a technician that you have rust or a crack in your heating chamber, and you decide to let them replace your furnace, tell them they are going to have to show you (or someone) the damage before they haul it off! That should keep them honest.
Unreliable & Bad Customer Service...Don't Bother by akpufa - 02/17/2009They were difficult to set an appointment with, then didn't show up to the appointment at all. Called a half hour after the appointment & asked if anyone had showed, then gave a weak excuse. Then they basically told us they do a good job, but they are expensive, so maybe it isn't worth our time to schedule them (again) for a bid. Thanks for wasting our time Whipple.
Didn't show up after rescheduling by Chasquido - 01/09/2009Wednesday and would call 1/2 hour before arriving. At 1:30, they called to tell me the didn't have the faucet but were expecting a shipment on Friday. I said, fine, and rescheduled for between 3 and 5 on Friday. On Friday, they didn't call. I called at 4:30, and the claim they called and left me a message on my machin at 1:30 and because there was no response they didn't send a "technician." The phone number I left was my cell phone - there certainly was no call or voicemail, so they must have called someone else, if they called at all. Also, why would they call at 1:30 if they scheduled between 3 and 5 PM? Sounds like from the other reviews on this site that walking away after the second missed appointment is the right decision. You can't be a "Service Champion" if you don't even show up....
Not reliable and apathetic by BRE - 11/09/2008I needed a winter tune-up for my furnace (not the green sticker) and was initially told I would have to wait over 2 months. I called back a few days later and was told that I could have an appointment in the next fews days, so I made one. Technician never showed up and I wasted my whole morning. When I called to find out what happened, I was told times are just estimates. I canceled the appointment and they didn't care that they lost my business. My time is valuable too!
Job pricing not to customers benefit by Crazy22 - 10/24/2008I found water leaking into my carpet and called Whipple. Their straight forward pricing shot my bill up fast. After removing a toilet and scoping a pipe with a camera the bill was already $638 in less than an hour of work. ( I had a part time general handyman fix a similar problem previously for a total of ONLY $115). Whipple misdiagnosed the problem as something much more serious and the plumber had the bill at over $2,000. I called in another plumber from a different organization the next morning and he got me out of the unjustified $2,000 mess and fixed the leak in the wall.
The second plumber's organization charges about $125/hour. If a plumber is charging more than $150/hour for labor I would question their intentions.
Fast, Clean, Professional Service. I recommend them to everyone! by BDAUG1 - 05/30/2008These guys came out to my house three times. Oh my gosh! They put on shoe covers. I heard they had "red carpet service," these guys literally roll out red carpets. In all cases they quoted me the price in advance, and stuck to it. They use straight forward pricing where the price is in a book. The first time I used them was for a drain stoppage that two other plumbing companies couldn't figure out. They later installed a water softener that my wife loves. Then when our "under warranty" two year old water heater sprung a leak and we called the company who had installed it and they were out of busineess (Purdue) we called Whipple who handled the other company's warranty and replaced the leaker with one that has a 10 year parts and labor warranty. They are clean-cut and according to a patch on their uniform, they are drug tested, background checked, and professionally trained. I have girls. That means a lot to my wife too. I was so impressed each time, and recommend them highly.
Excessively Pricey by abednego - 03/20/2008The technician came to my home, assessed the need, and quoted me a price of $1997 for a new 50 gallon hot water heater. At my request, he broke down the quote into $630 materials and nearly $1400 in labor. The installation was estimated to take three hours. I was simply amazed that this company feels that the plumber should make $450 per hour in labor. I called Thomson and Sons. They installed the same hot water heater in two hours for less than half of what Whipple wanted to charge. I would not call this company again.
