After looking at a couple places for backsplash tile, we decided to stop by Upstairs Downstairs to see what they had. To be honest, we almost didn't go there because we thought they'd be way out of our price range. We met Diane and showed her a piece of our granite from our counter (typically, granite for countertops are 3 cm thick) and a cabinet door for color. We looked around at the amazing selection - everything from standard, to unique one of a kind samples. It was almost overwhelming, there were so many options. Luckily Diane knows her business (not sure, but she may be the owner) and her suggestions were so much better than what we found. We almost had chosen a tile from another store our installer had recommended and so glad we didn't settle for 'vanilla' when we could have a designer look.

I can't comment on the gentleman that also works there, but if you ask for Diane you won't be disappointed - she's the best and I would recommend her highly.

Upstairs/Downstairs has a great selection of tile - one of the best selections that I've seen and I've been everywhere searching for tile in the metro west/merrimack valley . The store offers value plus to high end tile and seems to offer every line of tile that was available at the Boston Design Center, but at betterr prices and absence of the hassle of a city drive.

Service was good. Our salesperson Diane was attentive to our needs, and gave us the time/space to wonder thru the showroom and select our thoughts on possible options. And did a good job of letting us know when we selected tile inappropriate for our needs (kitchen backsplash) and providing us with alternatives.



Pricewise - its not cheap, but then again, good tile rarely is.

The sales person , a older man was very unpleasant ,rude and demeaning. We wanted to get a quote for the granite counter top for our kitchen. He was first of all disinterested in our queries and was perticularly terse and rude. We asked if the sample they had was of the thickeness that a granite counter top would be and he said I cant get a huge slab for you and place it here. This was uncalled for and was a simple question that anyone would ask because their granite selection pieces were extremely thin and looked like tiles. Also the guy went on to take a phone call and dint excuse himself or appoligize after he came back after 30 minutes. So after spending almost 1hr at the place we couldnt get any information whatsoever about the pricing or any queries we had about installation. If he dint want our bussiness atleast he could have not wasted our time. I also saw that other customers were waiting and he was not being helpful to anyone else there either.

While the tile selection at Upstairs Downstairs is beautiful, and they are exclusive dealers for some tile manufacturers, the sales staff is very unpleasant. In my case, the salesperson repeatedly told me that I could not install the tiles I chose - even after my installer reviewed and OK'd the materials. Nothing in the store is priced, and the sales person was extremely reluctant to tell me prices on anything. In one case, he did not even bother to give me the correct price for the tile I selected.

I was VERY disappointed in my experience there. After driving to another tile store, the staff there told me that they've heard this complaint about Upstairs Downstairs many times.

I will certainly be taking my business elsewhere.
