University Congregational United Church of Christ is a progressive liberal Protestant church. We see ourselves as an inclusive church, open to diverse people and beliefs, but rooted in God's extravagant love, mercy and justice. At the start of every worship service our clergy declares, "You are welcome here, whether you are a believer, a seeker, or a doubter. We pray that you will be met here by the living Christ."
We are a covenantal church, not a doctrinal church. This means that members of our church agree to work together toward certain shared principles. Our members are not required to swear allegiance to a defined set of beliefs.
We are an open and affirming church. This means that we celebrate our diversity in religious background, sexual orientation, race and abilities.
A little of our history
Like the 17th century Pilgrims of our Congregational heritage, the founders of UCUCC were also "pilgrims." In 1891, they established the "First Church of Brooklyn" as the first church in what is now the University District of Seattle. The original frame chapel stood on Brooklyn Avenue near 41st Street.
By 1910, when a new and larger building was erected at 43rd and Brooklyn, there were other churches in the district and we changed our name to University Congregational. Our present building, at the northwest corner of the University campus, was occupied in 1953 and remodeled in 1969. Today, having passed our hundredth year, we are a church with a metropolitan outlook, and members drawn from many parts of the city and suburbs.
We are part of the United Church of Christ, formed in 1957 through a merger of the Congregational Christian and Evangelical and Reformed Churches, now numbering 1.3 million members in 5,725 churches in the United States and Puerto Rico. Through it we share in the work of the National and World Councils of Churches. Locally, we support the Church Council of Greater Seattle.
In the spirit of our heritage, we combine a common loyalty to Jesus Christ with respect for the uniqueness of each individual. We share commitment to God, to one another, and to the world while valuing diversity and open inquiry. We covenant to walk together in faith, but assent to a particular creed is never a requirement.
