History

Keith Dempster opened The Mill Restaurant in 1962 as a coffee house/restaurant/folk music venue. Over the years it became the center of an Americana music community in Iowa City that achieved national and international fame. The Mill also became known for great pizza and sandwiches.

Recent History

At the end of June, 2003 The original owners, Keith and Pam, closed The Mill. The Mill was important to many people in Iowa City, where local landmarks are steadily being replaced with cookie-cutter buildings and chain restaurants. On July 19, 2003 The Mill reopened, and will be preserved for as long as possible.

The Goal

To maintain and improve upon all the things that have made The Mill a special place in Iowa City. To be a home for area musicians and other creative artists. To bring great artists to this intimate venue. To be a place where friendly staff serve great food and drinks at a great price.

Parties and Events

The Mill can host parties, special events, and benefit concerts for over 200 people. There is generally no fee for use of the room as long as food and beverages are purchased from The Mill, but we may ask for a refundable deposit to reserve the room. Please try to arrange for large events 4 – 6 weeks in advance if possible. There is plenty of metered and ramp parking within 1/2 block of the Mill, and it is located within 1 block of the Sheraton and Hotel Vetro in downtown Iowa City.
