The Meadow was founded by Mark Bitterman in 2006 out of a shared love for food, culture, and travel. Before opening his first shop, he'd spent the greater part of two decades traveling throughout Europe, restoring chateaus in France, eating perfectly salted grilled steak at a roadside stop somewhere in the Pyrenees, and generally exploring and eating everything in sight ... and maybe causing a little trouble along the way. Mark came back to the United States and opened his first shop on the sleepy (soon to be very bustling) little street of N. Mississippi Ave in Portland, Oregon. It is here that he began to explore craft made salts, gourmet chocolates, handmade cocktail bitters, all of which we carry in our shops today. The Meadow was founded by Mark Bitterman in 2006 out of a shared love for food, culture, and travel. Cute little store that sells gorgeous flowers and an amazing array of salts and bitters. Spent way too much money but excited to try different cocktails with my new bitters.

Best of...Chocolate! The largest and most interesting selection of chocolates I have seen!

After seeing their stand at the Portland Farmer's Market, where they were selling like 30 gourmet sea salts, I decided to stop by to by their store. I was surprised to find the shop also carries literally hundreds of chocolate bars, drinking chocolates, etc. They also have a huge selection of pepper grinders, and great wines (I bought a sake and a wine by Soter, which was great). My friend bought a card and some flowers that the owner made into a beautiful bouquet. I focused on the chocolates, and bought two chocolate bars. The next time you need chocolate, salt, flowers, wine, and oh yes, very beautiful charcoal drawings of nudes... I definitley recommend checking them out!

The best selection of dark chocolates I have ever seen, amazing gourmet salts, in a beautiful shop!

I make point of stopping by The Meadow almost every week. They are very knowledgeable about the chocolate and salt and wine, and have beautiful flowers and an old world style charm. It seems they have taken everything great and necessary in life and distilled it into one space. Their "wall of chocolate" includes dark chocolate bars from every corner of the globe, and they have a great selection of drinking chocolate, too. They are best known for their "finishing salts" which were totally new to me before I went there, but they have literally changed my life. Their enthusiasm and knowledge make shopping easy. Salt chocolate wine and flowers, need I say more? I have also been to one of their salt and chocolate tasting events, which they paired with wine. I would recommend these events to anyone who wants to learn more about chocolate or gourmet salt, or food in general. Also, this is the best place to shop for a gift imaginable. The Meadow is packed with unusual finds!
