Mission Statement

To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in 17 Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Community Programming

More than 2,200 athletes participate in SOUT. The state is divided along geographical and county lines into seven Area programs. Each Area is administered to by an Area Director, who is supervised by Area Coordinators from the SOUT state office. This grass-roots supervision results in excellent competition, training, fund raising, finances, out-reach, public education and volunteer recruitment at the local level. In an Area program, athletes are enrolled and trained by volunteer coaches. SOUT operates out of headquarters in Salt Lake City.
