For over thirty years, Southwest Seed has been growing along with the environmental and reclamation movements in order to give our customers the very best in products, information and full service.
What does full service mean? We begin by producing as much of our own seed as possible on our 700 acre farm in Montezuma County, Colorado. We grow over 40 different grass and wildflower species. When a released variety is produced, like Arriba western wheatgrass or Redondo Arizona fescue, the field is certified by the Colorado Certified Seed Growers Association. Non varietal fields are generally source identified and sold with a yellow certified tag giving the location and elevation of the collected starter seed.
Next, we have a state of the art conditioning plant where newly harvested seed is cleaned and made ready for customer use. Conditioned seed is tested at either a state seed lab or a private AOSCA certified lab. All seed sold is tested. We make no in house guesses.
Our service begins in the production fields and continues on to include advice on how to prepare a seedbed and when and how to plant the seed. Making it rain is perhaps the only service we do not offer.
We can offer you seed from a wide selection of species: alfalfa, brome grass, clover, fescue, cool or warm season grasses, legumes, orchard grass, ryegrass, wheatgrass, and selected small grains. You need to tell us the type of seeding that you intend to make, your elevation and average moisture annually, how you plan to prepare your seed bed and put the seed in the ground, what species you want and we can suggest the correct varieties.
You may know pretty much what you want and just how you plan to accomplish the job. You may know the end result that you want and we will ask the questions to help you decide what will give you the best results. We have custom seed mixtures for beautiful irrigated lawns including Kentucky Bluegrass lawn type fescues and ryegrasses. Perhaps you want a lawn, but would like to avoid many of the hassles of caretaking it. We can assist with low maintenance type lawn seed for either cool season or warm season locals. We can also help with those land areas that are not next to your home but need to be addressed to help with erosion, dust control, beauty, and attracting wildlife, birds, and butterflies.
For landowners with pasture area to the serious farmer/rancher, we can help you create the tailored mix to suit your particular situation. We work with local NRCS offices to meet seed needs for CRP and EQIP programs.
