Pregnancy terminations to 12 weeks.
Surgical abortions in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy are in most instances a one-day procedure. You should plan to be in the clinic about 2 hours. Procedures are done using a local anesthetic or a combination of local anesthesia and IV sedation (twilight sleep). We request that you do not eat or drink anything except water for four hours prior to your appointment. If you are receiving IV sedation, you must have someone to drive you home. Those patients having only local anesthesia may drive themselves. Someone may be with you in the waiting room, and may accompany you for your consultation with the doctor prior to the procedure. However, for purposes of asepsis (sterility) we do not allow anyone in the procedure room other than our staff. A family member or friend may sit with you while you are in recovery. You will be given an appointment for a follow-up visit in about 2 weeks. Please call us or email the nurse with any questions you may have.
Pregnancy terminations after 12 weeks.
We perform pregnancy terminations until 18 weeks of pregnancy. Abortions after 12 weeks usually require a 2-step process. On the first visit, you will have a consultation with the doctor, an exam and an ultrasound to determine the exact length of your pregnancy. A small tampon like device called a laminaria will be inserted into your cervix. This will gradually open your cervix overnight, during which you may go about your normal activities. You will return on the following day for the procedure. IV sedation is routine for the second day of the procedure, so you must have someone to drive you.You may have someone with you in the waiting room and the recovery area, but no one other than staff is allowed in the procedure room. You will be given a follow-up appointment in about 2 weeks.
