Horrible neighborhoods

Where do I even begin? Firstly, it was extremely hard to get ahold of someone who could draw up a lease for me. I lived out of town and I called every half hour one day and never got ahold of anyone and this was in the middle of summer, not during the rush period. Finally I talked to Penny in the office who is not the brightest bulb in the tanning bed to say the least. She then proceeded to send me the lease to the wrong apartment complex which took another two days to get that straightened out. After getting the lease overnighted to the office, she then proceeds to call me and tell me she forgot a form and I need to have that in ASAP. Come move-in day I get to my apartment, only to find that they gave me a 1st level apartment in another building and not the one they showed me and then proceeded to promise to me. I got moved to a second level apartment in another building which was ok. It did have nice carpet and the washer/dryer was fabulous. HOWEVER, Broadway street is FULL o

Apt. was in PRISITINE condition when I moved two months ago but still have not received my security deposit back. Southgate says they mailed the security deposit to an address I lived at two years ago- but I never told them to mail it there. What business would mail a check to an old address they know the person doesn't live at and on top of that not cancel the check when they know they made a mistake? I don't buy it, now they won't return calls/emails. Iowa LAW SAYS: "A landlord shall, within thirty days from the date of termination of the tenancy and receipt of the tenant's mailing address or delivery instructions, return the rental deposit to the tenant or furnish to the tenant a written statement showing the specific reason for withholding of the rental deposit or any portion thereof..." Southgate has broken this law. They are trying to get away with this because they know I moved out of state and it will be hard for me to take time off work and go to court in Iowa City.

Dishonest management

Make you sick when you talk about the management. Poor value for the money and disgusting service.Not even basic amenities provided. Beware of their security deposit scams, you will hear multiple stories from various people.My suggestion would be if you have a chance, don't get into these apartments, you will be stuck!!

Horrible experience

This company is not responsive. After being good tenants for three years, the raised rent significantly every year and were ineffective at reconciling safety problems. We finally had to move mid lease because of these issues That persisted for over 8 months. Very bad rental company.

Excellent Maintenance

My experience with the maintenance guys was nice. Every time I have a problem they fix it better than I wanted. They really know how to fix and replace almost everything. They can have some delays sometimes due to the large number of properties they manage around the city, but urgent matters they are prompt. Dealing with the staff at the office didn't encounter any troubles until now.
