Asbestos is a fiber found in rocks throughout much of the world. It is stronger than steel, yet flexible enough to be woven. For 2,000 years, asbestos has been used in manufacturing for its durability, strength, and heat resistance. It was considered the silk of the mineral world before its cancer-causing properties were discovered.
All public and commercial buildings, regardless of age or construction type, must be inspected for asbestos before any renovation or demolition activity begins. This inspection must be performed by a certified asbestos inspector.
Removal requirements vary depending on type of material, friability, accessibility, and other factors. A professional consulting firm knowledgeable in these variances must be consulted before any work can occur.
Many houses and apartments built before 1978 contain lead-based paint. Serious health problems can result from exposure to or ingestion of lead.
Lead can enter the body by
* Putting hands or other objects containing lead
dust in the mouth
* Eating paint chips or soil that contains lead
* Breathing in lead dust created when painted
surfaces are disturbed
Lead is more dangerous to children because
* Babies and children often put their hands and
other objects in their mouths.
* Children’s growing bodies absorb more lead.
* Children’s brains and nervous systems are more
sensitive to the damaging effects of lead.
