Four Things Every Parent Should Know About A Studio
The Studio Floor
Quality of Teachers
Class Sizes
Atmosphere
The Studio Floor
1) A lifted floor provides a cushion. In dance classes, students wear minimal foot protection. A lifted floor moves when a student jumps, and is soft on the feet.
2) A lifted floor prevents injuries. Dancing on wood helps prevent shin splints, foot injuries, and sore tendons. It also provides the cushioning necessary to let a student increase in strength without injury.
At River Meadows Ballet our studios have raised floors, providing these benefits to our students.
Quality of Teachers
A student needs to start training with a teacher who teaches correct principles of technique such as:
Correct standing body alignment
Foot support
When a student should go on pointe shoes
Knee to foot alignment
A good teacher uses these principles in class and corrects students, in order to prevent injury and bad training. A good teacher is positive in their corrections, instead of degrading. A good teacher pushes their students to work hard, and rewards them openly when they achieve.
At River Meadows Ballet our teachers are Good Teachers! The director is in contact with each teacher consistently, asking about the progress of classes and individuals. Our teachers have excellent training, with degrees in dance, teaching dance, and performance.
Class Sizes
Class size affects the training of a student. Corrections are more individual with smaller class sizes. Students improve at a quicker pace. The teacher is more in tune with the class attitude and atmosphere.
At River Meadows Ballet we limit class sizes. Pre-dance is limited to eight students per class. Ballet I and up are limited to twelve students per class, giving the students one-on-one time with teachers.
