Dr. Foster resumes his longstanding Lafayette practice in August, 2016, after a year of consulting in Europe. He is back until late 2017, and is accepting clients who will benefit from short-term therapy. In this type of therapy, Dr. Foster is active in each meeting, encouraging clients to view his or her situation in a wider context, and to practice these alternative ways of thinking and acting in the time between meetings. It is an approach rooted in the here and now: any focused attention on childhood occurs only when the therapy encounters a major stumbling block. Short term therapy is appropriate for INDIVIDUALS with depression/anxiety from specific causes; indecision in relationships, work, school; problems communicating/resolving conflicts; codependency; sexual concerns. COUPLES with infidelity; commitment; feeling heard; maintaining closeness during parenting struggles. FAMILY issues, including ongoing conflicts with a child; discipline with appropriate limits/boundaries; co-parenting; stage problems, e.g., teenage-hood. In addition to years in private practice, Dr. Foster worked at Kaiser (training post-doctoral interns), and in inpatient settings, developing expertise in focused therapy. He is experienced with more serious diagnoses and with psychiatric medication. He has taught for The University of Maryland, and has conducted numerous trainings in psychotherapy and diagnosis.
