Rattlesnake Hill Sporting Goods opened in May 1997. The store began in my In-laws, Joan and Ed Garland, garage as a snowmobile repair shop. We ran out of room and Joan got tired of strangers in her garage. So we purchased the southwest corner of SR534 and SR82 in Braceville Twp., Trumbull County, Ohio. We broke ground in January 1997 and opened in May.
The first thing most people ask us is how we got the name Rattlesnake Hill in Ohio. Well this is the story: In the late 1700's, early 1800's Braceville Twp. was being settled. The main cause of death in those days were rattlesnake bites. In those days this wasn't just a hill it was a ridge. To help minimize the rattlesnake population all the surrounding settlers organized a snake round-up. Everyone started in their home area and headed toward the ridge beating the brush with sticks, rakes, pitch forks, and anything else they could find. In the Trumbull County history book it tells of one round-up that ended in the death of 486 snakes of all kinds, some were as big around as a man's thigh. After they killed the snake they would throw them over the the ridge. In that era this was known as Rattlesnake Hill. So now you know.
We have grown since the snowmobile days and now have a little of everything. We have guns, archery, fishing, clothes, feed and now scuba.
