Kept our son interested in playing the piano for 10 years … and counting

Ten years ago, our son said he thought he might like to play the piano. We had the great fortune to find Pierre. Today, our son plays beautifully and still takes lessons from Pierre between college classes. How does Pierre keep the kids (especially the boys) interested, despite the demands of school, sports and the oh-so-diverting XBox/ Playstation? In my opinion, he doesn’t teach piano; he teaches a love for making music. He learns the music that fires the soul of the individual student - both youth and adult - plays some skill-appropriate pieces that emulate that genre, lets the student choose which pieces they would like to work on, then teaches skills along the way. In our family’s experience, our son wouldn’t have practiced a scale for five minutes, but he would practice tricky maneuvers - trills, pedaling, staccato, etc. - relentlessly until he could finally play a beloved piece from beginning to end. Pierre does not put his students on the competition circuit. The demands of life are sufficient without the added stress of competition. Our son was in the International Baccalaureate Program in high school and would have most certainly dropped piano lessons if it had been just one more deadline to meet. Pierre's hope for his students is that they get to a level of proficiency that is satisfying and enables them to play for themselves and those close to them - for the JOY of it. Come performance time, he does have the occasional formal recital, but prefers informal soirees at his studio (in his home) because of the relaxed, familial environment. It gets a little crowded sometime, but is SO much kinder to the performer. It is awesome for the elementary players to hear the higher level students play and imagine where they’ll be if they stick with it. I don’t want to give the impression that Pierre is an instructor for beginner and intermediate students only. He has plenty of university diplomas/degrees on his wall to attest to his training and proficiency and, if their is lingering doubt, models the value of always sharpening your skills by presenting his own piece at every soiree. Spoiler: It’s always jaw-dropping. And he has other ways of mixing it up and keeping things interesting for his students. When the other two male students of our son’s age and ability were in high school, Pierre challenged them with a four-handed piece played on his two grand pianos. Joined by Pierre, the young men performed magnificently. I’m quite sure few in the room had witnessed such a spectacle. More importantly to a mom, it was overwhelming to see the pride in all our young men’s eyes at having created such a beautiful piece of auditory and visual art for all in attendance. So I’ve seen Pierre take many students, youth and adult, to any destination they desire when it comes to skill level and music interpretation. However, in my opinion what distinguishes Pierre is that he cultivates and nurtures the student’s long term love for the music and the instrument, as well as a confidence in achieving mastery of chosen pieces. He’s made a HUGE difference in our son’s development. …and it’s not too shabby being on the receiving end when my son plays. He’s quite good.
