"Pan Jumbies" is a Caribbean term which essentially means "steel drum fanatics". It is an apt name for Colorado's Pan Jumbies, formed in 1991 around a common obsession with this oft-misunderstood instrument. Pan is the national musical instrument of Trinidad & Tobago, where it was invented by urban youths in the early 1940s.
Pan Jumbies was founded by Don Prorak. Don has performed with some of Trinidad’s top steelbands, including the highly acclaimed ”Phase II Pan Groove”, “ Carib Tokyo”, “TCL Skiffle Bunch”, and “Hummingbirds Pan Groove”. He is one of the few Americans to perform in Trinidad’s music festival, which includes calypso and classical music.
Pan Jumbies has evolved a great deal over the years. Don Prorak (steel pans & vocals) fronts the group. Jim Theobald’s marimba has brought a new dimension to the band and his compositions have expanded the repertoire. Rich Rychel (drums) and Blake Eberhard (bass & vocals) are the “engine room” of the band. Additional pans - Tom Miller, Paul Munzenrider, and Rick Henson - can be added to expand the steelband sound, along with percussion, guitar, and more.
Pan Jumbies has two CD’s available, “Say It With Pan”, and “Jam It With You”. Both are available at concerts, from the Pan Jumbies web site http://panjumbies.com , and on line from CD Baby: http://cdbaby.com/cd/panjumbies1 and http://cdbaby.com/cd/panjumbies2
Toco Bay is an instrumental duo, consisting of Don on steel pan and Theo on marimba, which highlights the beauty and versatility of both instruments.
Toco Bay is a versatile group, whether presented acoustically or amplified. It is perfect for cocktail hours or parties, brunches, wedding ceremonies and receptions, recitals, small concerts, or other intimate settings. Musically, Toco Bay covers calypso, Latin, reggae, pop, jazz and classical styles, as well as original music.
Don Prorak is also available as a solo pan artist for many types of events. He performs on double 2nd pans, either acoustically or amplified, showcasing the instrument in an intimate, transparent, & fun context.
