BUSINESS OVERVIEW

Description

Old Wives' Tales has been open since 1980, offering a multi-ethnic menu of vegetarian, chicken and seafood dishes. The extensive menu, including many small plates and a la carte choices, makes it possible to select a range of dining experiences from light meals to multi-course feasts. The restaurant is famous for its Salad Bar and for its Hungarian Mushroom Soup, which is always available on the Soup Bar, along with fresh Clam Chowder and two choices of vegan, gluten-free vegetable soups that change daily.

Virtually everything is house-made, emphasizing fresh produce, whole grains, natural chicken and wild seafood. Ingredients are carefully selected to avoid preservatives and other unhealthy additives or "mystery ingredients".

Old Wives' Tales is open every day of the week, serving casual, moderately priced breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts. Breakfast is available anytime. Lunch service extends all morning and afternoon, with dinner service beginning at 4:30PM (Sunday at 2PM).

Old Wives' Tales has a central Portland location, just across the Burnside Bridge from downtown, close to all freeways and to the Convention Center. The central location and plentiful free parking make it a popular place for people coming from different parts of the metropolitan area to meet. See link in the top banner.

Old Wives' Tales offers a choice of three dining rooms. The spacious Main Dining Room with adjoining Children's Playroom features jazz and other recorded contemporary instrumental music. The smaller Classical Music Dining Room offers a quieter, more intimate ambiance. The East Dining Room is available for private celebrations and meetings for groups of up to 32.

The Children's Playroom provides a place for toddlers to 10 year olds to entertain themselves, so parents and other adults can enjoy a more leisurely dining experience. Parties with younger children are seated close to the playroom.

Over the years, the large moderately priced menu has expanded to meet a wide variety of dietary needs and preferences, such as food allergies, gluten and lactose intolerance, vegan and low carb/high protein. Diners are empowered to meet their individual needs because the ingredients in the various dishes are listed on the printed menus and on the cards posted by the Soup and Salad Bar, including such details as type of non-hydrogenated oil and type of vinegar.

From its inception, Old Wives' Tales has served the community by providing more than food. There is a long expanse of resource bulletin boards for posting notices of local social, cultural and political activities, organizations and events, and a wide variety of free periodicals flank the entrance. The restaurant supports the efforts of dozens of local non-profit organizations annually through donations of food and gift certificates.
