Description for New Ability, Inc.

New Ability, Inc. is an adaptive vehicle equipment company serving the disabled community in all of the Chicagoland, IL, area since 1985. We realize the importance of independence and the ability to get out and go wherever you like - we aim to make that happen for you.

Products and services we offer include:

• Left-foot gas pedals
• Custom hand controls for gas and brake
• Transfer seats
• Scooter and wheelchair lifts
• Expert installations
• Motorcycle pedal controls by hand, shift and brake
• Service and maintenance
• Hand control transfers to different vehicles
• Wheelchair lift transfers to different vehicles

For drivers and passengers we sell a full line of Bruno Lifts to store unoccupied wheelchairs and scooters in vehicles, as well as Bruno Valet Signature Seating, (formerly Turning Automotive Seating). These wonderful swivel seat bases make it so easy to transfer into autos, SUVs, pick-ups, minivans and full-size vans, any challenged driver or passenger would love to use it. Caregivers love how easy it is for them to transfer a client into a vehicle with these marvels.

We also sell and install an exterior Stow-Away Lift that can raise you from transfer height up to the driver or passenger seat height for use with SUVs and pick-up trucks. The lift then folds and stores in a weatherproof housing under the vehicle.

We also sell and install folding ramps for minivans along with wheelchair tie-down systems. Power lockdowns are also available from EZ Lock and Permobil and Q'Straint in driver or passenger positions.

We now exclusively offer motorcycle pedal modifications for shift and rear brake by hand instead of by foot. You will be able to shift and brake by push-button controls. This is for persons with right foot control issues, foot amputees and paraplegics. If the highway is calling you to ride, then give us a call for more details.

New Ability works one-on-one for each job. You will not be confronted by a room full of salesmen. We won't try to sell you what you do not need. From the ability to get into a vehicle on your own again, to being able to drive, we give you back your independence.

5 Installed Hand Controls for gas and brake by jefflinton - 10/08/2013

I am a double amputee and needed hand controls installed in my car. A friend of mine recommended Jerry Slingerland at New Ability in Melrose Park, IL. The process was very simple. I made an appointment and Jerry prepared me for about 4 hours for the installation. On the day of my appointment, Jerry was very accommodating and drove me to a Panera Bread close by where I was able to get an internet connection and get work done while he was installing the hand controls. When he was finished, he returned to pick me up and take me back to his office where he was happy to do some fine tuning on the installation until I was satisfied. He familiarized me with the operation of the hand controls and encouraged me to get back to him if there was anything that needed to be modified. The hand controls have been working wonderfully over these past couple weeks and have really helped to relieve the stress on my right leg. Jeff from Chicago

5 Jerry made it easy to get back into my work life by Paul from Chicago - 05/27/2013

I suffered nerve damage in my right leg as the result of a hip replacement in May 2012. As a result, I lost all strength and function in my right foot (severe foot drop) and could not drive. I was depressed and did not know how I would teach in the fall. I talked to several companies that install assist devices for those who cannot drive in the usual way, but Jerry made the process of getting back to teaching the easiest. He told me that I could not modify my car with a stick shift in order to drive with hand controls. So I had to trade it in for a car with an automatic trans. He then installed a left foot gas pedal. The price for the pedal was very reasonable. He then advised me on what I would need to do to learn how to use it correctly. After getting training I was able to drlive the car left-footed until my right foot was sufficiently recovered from the nerve damage. Recently, a year after the surgery, Jerry removed the left foot pedal and restored the car to its new condition as a conventional car.I recommend Jerry and New Ability most highly. He makes it easy to make the transition to driving with assist devices. He was always cordial and helpful.

5 First class work by Hunter Tickel - 02/02/2013

New ability did a great job installing a left foot gas pedal. I'm a right foot amputee and them making it possible for me to drive again is a dream come true. For that I'm forever indebted to you. Thank you for making driving possible.

5 Left Foot Gas Pedal by Jay - 12/24/2012

I've purchased a left foot gas pedal for my new Honda Civic, since I can drive with only my left foot. I found this place on the internet and called Jerry to ask about details. He was very helpful and he gave me a reasonable price, he also told me about Honda's mobility reimbursement program that I did not know about. Hi did an excellent and perfectly clean job installing the adaptive equipment and it works great. I totally recommend this place to anyone who needs adaptive equipment on their vehicles.
