In 1805, the Lewis and Clark expedition discovered the mouth of the Hood River. Subsequent explorers and pioneers discovered the dense forests and rich, fertile soil of the Hood River valley—now internationally famous for its fruit industry. The Mt. Hood Railroad served as an economic lifeline for the valley, carrying fruit and forest products to market since 1906. In the 1920s and 30s the railroad was used as a commuter train by area residents. While still an active freight line, our rail tours now offer visitors some of Oregon’s most breathtaking scenery. Your journey begins in downtown Hood River [99ft sea level]- travel SE through the valley to the small town of Parkdale [1700ft sea level] all the while being entertained by beautiful views of Mt Adams, the Hood River, and Mt Hood.

The fun begins the moment you step aboard this century old railroad. Dating from the early 1900s, the Excursion Train is comprised of enclosed coaches, a concession car offering light food and beverage, with our newest addition the fabulous air-conditioned double decker dome car. The upper level of the dome offers an engineer's view; considered our premium seating it is an additional $10 per ticket. Reserve your seats early!

Sit back, enjoy the great views and visit with friends and family as you travel along the river, through forests, meadows and numerous fruit orchards. A live narration on the Excursion Train covers local history and key points of interest. During the hour layover feel free to pack your own picnic to enjoy in the park or sample the local cafes, and take in absolutely stunning views of Mt. Hood. Be sure to check out Excursion Train special events such as our Western Train Robbery, Autumn Festival, and Labor Day Carnival. *Reservations highly recommended!
