Leelanau Historical Society: The Leelanau Historical Society ( LHS ) was founded in 1957 by representatives from throughout Leelanau County who were interested in preserving the county's history as well as in identifying received and maintainted official nonprofit 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) status from the federal government. Exhibits and programs help to advance the understanding and appreciation of the cultural heritage of Leelanau County and strive to be responsive to the concerns, interests, and needs of our community. Our collection includes thousands of objects, photographs and documents. Collections are acquired, cared for, and interpreted with sensitivity to their cultural origin and context, and The Leelanau Historical Society is supported by a core of wonderful volunteers. The Society has approximately 1, 000 members and a Board comprised of nine Trustees.
