Before you start liquidating your "stuff", there are a few things you might want to know. As a former (30+years) antiques dealer and avid auction goer across the country, here are a few things you might consider before you sell.1. E-bay might cost a tiny bit less (maybe) than a commission to sell at auction. It will take hours of dedicated time sitting at a computer, posting, emailing back and forth and finally collecting your money and mailing. And don't forget, you might get it back, broken.2. Craigslist? You list, it drops on the list. You answer stupid questions, they come, who is it? No checks or CC, cash only. It's a crap shoot and they will always bargain.3. Consignment. By the time the shop sells it at a discount, minus the fees, you might net 15% of the sold price. Or, did it really sell or get donated?4. Dealer Sale. Yes, they will buy what you have for a fraction of the value. But, what is the value? Throw away the Value Guides, it's only worth what they are willing to pay. 5. Auction. There are good ones and bad ones. They all have a consignment fee, usually 25% of the sold price, which is very fair. Auction houses have catalogue sales that guarantee a minimum bid set by the house, otherwise they sell to the highest bidder. Strangely, some unexpected items bring huge prices and other desirable items are sold dirt cheap. Again, they will only bring what someone is willing to pay. 6. Buyer at Auction. Some auction houses have phantom bidders, a pole, an empty chair, a wall in the back of the room. You'll figure it out when you get a quick sold bid. An experienced auctioneer can read anyone like a book. They know when you are going to quit or not quit. They often allowed the consigner to bid up their own merchandise. But, if you didn't bother to ask about the item or you didn't look at it carefully or you didn't do your research, then you only have yourself to blame. Remember, the hammer price means SOLD. Now, the main reason I am writing this lengthy review is from my experience and opinion with J Levine Auction. As I have said before, I have been to hundreds of auctions over 40 years. The 70's brought about country antiques, ready to refurbish for use or to sell. The 80's was a lucrative time in which you could make some serious money on mostly furniture from Belgium. The 90's was also generous, buying furniture from S. America and the reproductions from Egypt and Indonesia, however, as 2000 approached, one could start seeing a decline. Prices had pushed through the roof to buy or sell. The twenty-first century has brought a new generation of Industrial Salvage into the market. Well recognized antiques, crystal, china, pottery and furniture bring a pitifully sad price at auction. While silver, copper and gold bring huge prices, some will be melted and only the very best will be salvaged by collectors.My experience with selling at Levine's broke my "dealer heart". My buying, however, has uplifted my spirits. It's not their fault when something is sold for less than you expected. They work their fanny off to get the best price. Remember they don't make a dime without a consignment or a bidder. The market has changed. I am retired. Knowing what to sell when and what to buy now is experience. As a result, I will continue to consign and buy at this auction house, because it is one of the only auctions I have ever trusted 100% in over 40 years.

I am writing this review because I fell I have been treated unfairly. I purchased ring from J Levine Auction Scottsdale AZ on 11/23/12 that I was going to give to my wife for Christmas. The credit card I had on file was declined and I immediately contacted the auction house to let them know I had every intention to pay for the ring but my credit card had been comprised. They sent me an email back about their terms and conditions and if I didnâ€™t pay by Thursday 11/28 they would have to report my none payment to Artfact.com and that I would no longer be able to bid on that site again. I felt that by contacting them of my situation they would work with me so I could meet the obligations that I had agreed on. So Friday morning 11/30 when I had a day off I sent them an email stating that I was sending a check out to pay for the item. Here is the email I sent them and their response I have sent a check in the mail today sorry for the delay when my check clears please ship the item, I will give you another my credit card for the shipping and would like it shipped so it gets here before 12/21 for Christmas I will pay extra if needed to get it to me by the above date. I apologize for the delay and earlier comments I understand you will need to report this to Artifact as a none payment and you as a business have to do whatâ€™s best for you. Again I apologize the best I can do is a check, I have some issues with my credit cards and cannot use them until I can straighten the mess out. Their response as I mentioned before, you had until Thursday morning to contact us with payment. Due to the violation of our terms and conditions we marked you as an unpaid bidder and relisted your item. Once we receive the check we will send it right back to you. My outstanding balance was $197.20 not a lot in the scheme of the size of the auction that day, and not after I had been in continuous contact with them. I did agree to their terms but I donâ€™t have control over my cards being hacked. Iâ€™m angry how unprofessional of this auction house, what terrible customer service, and now I question their integrity and honesty. How do I really know that what they sold me was what they said it was? Maybe their reaction to this issue is to cover-up the fact that the ring is not what they stated it was and itâ€™s their way of getting out of another issue with the ring when it finally got to me. I donâ€™t know and now will never know. All I do know that from past experience buying from online companies like this do not last long and are usually dishonest. I know I will never buy from them again; I have expectations on how I should be treated as an honest customer that has purchased many antiques from online auctions. I would also like to mention that Iâ€™m not an amateur at buying antiques. I have been an antique dealer for ten years part time and as a hobby. I know the business well, I sell quality antique Porcelain and Pottery and have been building a reputation as so, I am considered to be honest and fair. I put my customers first and have always paid my bills. I have a web site on Ruby Lane in good standing since 2009 and before that on EBay and have had a showcase at Adams Antiques in Adamstown PA and now at Kat & Co in Saint Joseph Mo. I do about 4 to 6 antique shows a year and make lots of friends and customers as I build my business and work toward retirement. I donâ€™t deny the terms and conditions that I agreed to when I signed up for this auction but the world is not black and white and sometimes you have to act professional and reasonable when an honest customer reaches out to you to try and fix their mistake, thatâ€™s not unreasonable. I am a reasonable person and believe issues or misunderstanding like this can be working with reasonable people. Katie M. Richards Receptionist has not done J Levine Auction any justice.
