Island Children’s Montessori School (ICMS) has been a Bainbridge Island institution for over 25 years. We recently moved to a bright new spacious location off of Sportsmans Club Road. Here at ICMS, we strive to provide a warm engaging environment that encourages a child’s natural curiosity and cultivates a natural, life-long love of learning.
ICMS is a small family-oriented non-profit Montessori School for preschool and kindergarten aged children. Our small size allows us to provide a program that focus on the development of each child at their own individual pace. We are currently accepting apsplication for ages two-and-a-half to six years old. Our morning 3-day program for the younger children runs Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, 9:00am till 12:00noon. Option of 4-day program is also available. Our afternoon 4-day program for the older children runs Monday through Thursday, 12:30pm till 3:30pm.
Optional supervised lunch period is available from 12pm to 1pm for children in both programs.
Embracing the Montessori Philosophy, ICMS focuses on each individual child’s needs: developmentally, socially and academically. Keeping this in mind, the program is tailored to reach each child at their own level.
Dr. Maria Montessori believed that no human being is educated by another person. They must do it for themselves or it will never be done. A truly educated
individual continues learning long after the hours and years spent in the classroom because they are motivated from within by a natural curiosity and love
of knowledge. Dr. Montessori felt, therefore, that the goal of early childhood education should not be to fill the child with facts from a preselected course of
studies, but rather to cultivate their own natural desire to learn.
In the Montessori classroom, this objective is approached in two ways. First, by allowing each child to experience the excitement of learning by their own
choice rather than by being forced: and second, by helping them to perfect all their natural tools for learning, so that their ability will be at a maximum in future
learning situations. The Montessori materials have this dual long-range purpose in addition to their immediate purpose of giving specific information to the child.
