1974 - 1977 Boycott organizer for the United Farm Workers, AFL-CIO in Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California.

1981 - 1984 Attended University of Minnesota Law School in Minneapolis, Minnesota; received law degree.

1982 - 1984 Staff member and managing editor of the University of Minnesota Law School's Journal of Law & Inequality.

1983 Summer internship with the Division of Advice of the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C.

1984 - present practice of law in Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington; since 1999, the owner of the Law Offices of James F. Gray in Vancouver; practice emphasizes employment law, immigration law, and the immigration effects of criminal convictions on immigrants.

1989 - 1992 Member of the Board of Directors of Centro Hispano de Clark County (Hispanic Center of Clark County); president of Centro Hispano during 1990 - 1991.

1991 - present member of Labor Roundtable of Vancouver, Washington.

2007 Won Bostain v. Food Express, an overtime case for a truckdriver, in the Washington Supreme Court. After that, the United States Supreme Court denied the employer’s petition for certiorari (i.e., did not take the case). This decision helps all truckdrivers who begin and end their runs in the State of Washington.
