Since 1990, at Frye Custom Log Homes, Inc., we specialty design and hand craft your dream home using hand-peeled, round, standing dead logs, straight from the forest. No milled logs are used on the walls. We use local logs from local companies. Due to availability, typically, we use Englemann spruce and lodgepole pine.
We offer 3 types of log work:
1. "Chink Style" is where the logs have an acrylic "chinking" between the logs on the outside and inside. Chinking comes in 6 different colors to complement your chosen log stain. The log corners are notched and sawn to fit snugly together.
2. "Swedish Cope" or "Full Scribe" is the traditional type of log work where the logs are notched at their corners as well as fit snugly over their lengths. No chinking is involved.
3." Hewn" is what the pioneers did by flattening the inside and outside of the logs with an adz. The corners are dovetailed. Wide chink lines are used.
We pre-build at our log yard, and then truck the logs to your foundation. We do not allow anyone else to erect our homes because we believe in quality control. We will complete the entire project, or only do the work that you request. We build in the local area of McCall, Riggins, and the surrounding areas. If you have future problems, Ron returns and fixes them at no charge. You will not get this kind of service from Canada, Montana, or Boise log companies.
The designer and log smith, Ron Frye, is on the job all day with his crew to ensure great craftsmanship. Ron was a woodworking teacher for 16 years, and has custom built furniture, so he is very particular where quality is concerned.
Our homes are built to accommodate for log shrinkage and settling. We acknowledge this process does happen, and we build to deal with the issue. Some other log home companies deny its existence. For example, above the windows and doors, we make extra space for the logs to settle. If this is not done, the log's weight will prohibit the windows and doors from opening! All log posts will have "screw jacks" under them. As the house settles, the jacks are screwed down, allowing the house and roof to follow.
Where interior walls join log walls, we install slip joints so as the log walls settle, they don't tear the attached sheet rock or wood walls. Also, this process keeps the plumbing from being crushed. When comparing log companies, these are very important issues to discuss. If the other companies don't allow for the logs to settle, you will definitely have future problems!
