The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, also known as DENR, offers technical assistance to the public, businesses, farmers and local government agencies. The department works to preserve and protect natural resources in North Carolina. It is responsible for the protection of fish, wildlife and wilderness areas. The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources operates a coastal management division that has operations in more than 15 coastal counties. The department also manages a water quality division that issues permits and monitors permit compliance. It establishes ambient air quality standards. In addition, the department operates a vehicle inspection and maintenance program. The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources administers forest fire prevention and suppression programs.
