There are many reasons why people come to therapy. Sometimes it is to deal with long-standing psychological issues, or problems with anxiety or depression. Other times it is in response to unexpected changes in one's life such as a divorce or work transition. Many seek the advice of a therapist as they pursue their own personal exploration and growth. Every therapy session is unique and caters to each individual and their specific goals. During therapy sessions it is standard to talk about the primary issues and concerns in your life. It is common to schedule a series of weekly sessions, where each session lasts 60 minutes. Sometimes individuals who are going through a particularly difficult challenge may request more time per session or more than one session per week. Therapy can be short-term, focusing on a specific issue or longer-term, addressing more complex issues or ongoing personal growth. There may be times when you are asked to take certain actions outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book or keeping records to track certain behaviors. Between sessions it is important process what has been discussed and integrate it into your life. For therapy to be most effective you must be an active participant, both during and between the sessions. What benefits can I expect from working with a therapist?Therapy can provide insight and new perspectives into life's challenges and can help create solutions to difficult problems. pre-marital counseling

by Leah , 08/31/2012

We found Paula through the Prepare/Enrich marriage counseling materials. Paula helped us work through our pre-marital counseling and be more prepared for marriage. Even though we already get along really well and mesh tightly, we still found it helpful to discuss issues we hadn't even thought of. Paula has a kind, welcoming manner. I have recommended her to several friends and will continue to do so.

I have found Paula Detjen to be very professional, respectful and motivating. She has offered me the best support in order to successfully manage my work and family stress. With her assistance, I was able to find a new sense of calm, a clear direction and enjoyment in life. I would highly recommend this therapist for any adult struggling with work burnout, or simply seeking a new purpose and pleasure in daily living.

If you are looking for someone who is wonderful with children....and parents, Paula is amazing. My son looks forward to going to talk to her, and I look forward to the appointments as well. She has patience, understanding, toys for my sons busy hands, and chocolate for a nice treat at the end of the session.

Teen and Child Counseling

by Katie , 08/20/2012

Coming from a blended family, Paula has helped us work through many issues dealing with physical and emotional abuse, abandonment, alcoholism, decision-making, etc. She has been with us through a very tough court process, and she has given all of us many tools to use to get through our struggles. The kids love getting their time alone with Paula and they feel much better after having someone listen and talk through their issues.

Paula Detjen

by Nancy , 08/18/2012

Paula has been counseling my daughter for around seven years. She has been a positive influence in her life as she struggled through the crucial teen years and has helped her and the rest of our family through many tough times. I honestly don't think we could have parented my daughter without her help. Her gentle guidance has been just what she's needed. I would highly recommend her to anyone struggling to parent a child.
