Q: how often should my chimney be cleaned

A: really it depends on the draw and the kind of wood you use but the rule of thumb is after every cord of wood you use it should be inspected and/or cleaned. If you burn 3 times during the winter season, it should be swept annually. If you burn twice a week, once a week or fewer it should be inspected and/or cleaned every 3 years.

Q: is cleaning a chimney messy?

A: we clean 95% of our chimneys from the top with a wire brush. We totally seal the fire box with a drop cloth during this process and then clean the smoke chamber with a chamber brush. The smoke shelf is cleaned with a triple filter vacuum and then the fire box is cleaned with a wire brush while the vacuum is running.
Q: how do I minimize the heat loss thru my fireplace?

A: the answer is a top-sided damper which is called a chim-a-lator which seals the flu tile completely with a spring loaded plate that is controlled from the fire box with a wire going up to the top.
