Proper unit sizing is important. Underestimating your cooling needs and you could be sweating and have higher electric bills, but buying a larger unit could result in the unit repeatedly turning off and on resulting in higher electric bills also.
Carbon Monoxide Scam - If a contractor tells you that your furnace is leaking carbon monoxide and you must replace your furnace, ask to see the proof, if they cannot show you a crack in your heat exchanger and cannot show you a carbon monoxide reading on a carbon monoxide meter or detector then ask them to leave and call someone else.
Freon Scam - Some companies advertise that they will add a pound of freon with your unit check. If you find that you are losing freon (even a pound) this is a problem. Any reputable contractor will find the leak with pressure test or die or electronic leak detector and repair the leak on your air conditioning system. No air conditioning system should leak refrigerant regularly and overcharging your system will result in premature failure of your system.
Commission Scam - Some technicians will replace something at each and every call; even if it is just a seasonal maintenance they will find something because they get paid only by commission. They are told that unless they sell something every call that will not get paid for that call.
Scam artists are fairly rare within the air conditioning industry and tend to be focused on fly-by-night operations. However, it is always a good idea for consumers to take precautions
