Clydeco Building Supplies began modestly in 1975. The humble beginnings of the business consisted of a small wooden shed, a shade tree, and a desire to provide reinforcing steel to contractors and home owners in Utah. After constructing his own home, B. Clyde Gammell, president of Clydeco Building Supplies, sold his excess rebar to a local contractor. Through this seemingly insignificant event an idea was born. Clyde inquired with some steel wholesalers in Salt Lake City, Utah, as to the possibility of buying more rebar with the intention of reselling it to local contractors. An agreement was reached and the rebar was made available. Clyde borrowed his father-in-laws farm truck and drove 50 miles north to Salt Lake City to retrieve as much rebar as the truck would hold. With an inventory, Clyde called contractors at night after returning home from his current employment. As soon as the supply of steel was depleted, Clyde made another trip to the wholesaler for more material.
Eventually, many of the contractors inquired as to the possibility of buying bars cut to specific lengths. A crude fabrication process was put into place. The bars were cut to length with an oxy-acetylene torch. Bent bars were also a request. This was accomplished by bending the bars, using the hitch or the post holes on the bed of a truck. Clydeco was now fabricating rebar as per customer requests.
In 1980, the building that houses Clydeco's main fabrication shop was built. The shop was built in a field that had previously been a cherry orchard. The building stood 50 x 100 feet. The shop contained a hydraulic shear, and an electric bender. The fabrication process was brought indoors, and was capable of producing cuts and bends more efficiently. Accuracy also increased with the addition of the new equipment. Some of the land was cleared and that enabled Clydeco to bring in additional sizes of rebar for inventory.
From this beginning nearly 30 years ago, Clydeco has grown both in size and services provided. Today, Clydeco Building Supplies, has over 20 employees. The shop is a full-service fabrication facility, capable of fabricating any size of rebar to specification. The shop was enlarged in 1995 to accommodate updated equipment needed to combat the growth of the company.
Clydeco services hundreds of customers each year. Projects that are supplied by Clydeco range from residential structures and commercial buildings to industrial projects.
