WIC is a special supplemental program for women, infants and children designed to promote nutrition and improve health outcomes and a lifetime of good behaviors for at-risk populations.

The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is administered in Oregon by the Department of Human Services, Public Health Division and is part of the part of the Office of Family Health, Nutrition and Health Screening. There are several locations throughout Oregon to serve you, including within the Wasco/Sherman Health Department in The Dalles, Oregon.

Women and children with a household income less than 185% of poverty guidelines and who have a nutritional risk are eligible to receive WIC assistance. Since 1974, WIC has served the needs of:

• Pregnant women
• Breastfeeding women with children under 12 months
• Non-breastfeeding women with children under 6 months
• Infants and children under 5 years

WIC helps to save lives and improve growth and development of young children. By providing nutritional education, promoting and supporting breastfeeding and improving access to health care, there is a marked improvement in birth outcomes, childhood cognitive development and immunization rates. WIC additionally focuses on reducing complications during pregnancy, reducing iron deficiency anemia and decreasing the number of premature and low birth-weight infants.

The Oregon WIC program serves clients statewide through county WIC clinics, Native American tribal organizations, migrant health and Head Start programs. WIC is a federally funded program.
