Never, ever again

When I arrived at 4:40 pm to take delivery of a Budget rental truck that had been arranged online, I and a friend were treated extremely poorly. The primary staff member was especially arrogant and rude, citing Budget "policy" as to why a second driver could not be added on, even though I brought in a color copy of the 2nd driver's license. The 2nd drivers name was also on the credit card I was using.I offered to let the clerk speak to the 2nd driver on the phone, but the clerk refused repeatedly to speak to him, literally sneering, "How do I know that he is really who you say he is?". The clerk was advised that the 2nd driver was flying into town the next day, and would be glad to come into the office personally to sign the rental agreement prior to him driving the truck. Nope. Not good enough. Against "policy". It was "cheating Budget".For every solution I proposed to work within Budget's computer systems & "policy", the clerk flatly told me that it couldn't be done. He even had the gall to question my veracity and ethics. This was totally uncalled for & I was deeply offended.When I asked to speak to the clerk's supervisor to try to come to a solution, the clerk told me no; that the supervisor had gone home for the day and could not be contacted. An immediate call to Budget's 1-800 customer service number resulted in only a message to call back in the morning, when it re-opened. (A whole other nest of snakes: a national company closing customer service prior to 5:00 pm on a weekday?? Preposterous.)The entire encounter was completely unsatisfactory, including the staff being focused on departing work at 5:00 pm & not a moment later, rather than trying to be helpful. They even counted money & started locking up in front of me.We cancelled the Budget truck on the spot rather than dealing any more with this business, and immediately made arrangements with a competitor (another major rental truck company). It should be noted the competitor had a can-do attitude despite the short notice; did not throw up the "policy" obstacles that Brumback / Budget did, and bent over backwards to help us make our move on schedule -- something that Brumback and Budget clearly didn't care about.The experience was so negative that we have filed formal written complaints with our credit card company and AARP, including that a "no show" fee was charged even though I was very much there on the premises & cancelled the truck exactly as the clerk told me how to do. Our experience has also been shared with friends; the rental truck competitor that we switched to, and the local business that helped us load the truck.A formal written complaint was also filed with Budget over 2 weeks ago. Budget has yet to make any sort of response.FWIW, Brumback's staff got their wish & were able to depart right at 5:00 pm as they no longer had to be bothered by renting to us. Also, Budget as a company will no longer need to be concerned with renting autos to us. Because of work / travel requirements this is something we need to do as frequently as 3 days / week. The clerk told me it was "now or never" to rent. It will be never: we have a choice who we rent from, and Budget has lost all of our future business.
