The situation you describe is completely out of character with our hospital philosophy as well as virtually all of our hospital policies. 1. Every animal we draw blood samples on has had a complete physical exam BEFORE we run labs. 2. A positive leukemia test means, in general, that a cat has either been exposed to the virus or is infected with it. Under NO circumstances would any individual at Bethany have recommended euthanasia of an otherwise healthy cat based on a single screening test for FELV. Only if a cat tests positive for a second test run after a specific interval, or tests positive on a specialized second test called an IFA, is it assumed to actually be infected with leukemia virus. 3. Even when the discussion of euthanasia is inevitable due to the diagnosis or physical condition of our patients, the only time when we feel that the decision is urgent is when our patients are suffering and we are unable to maintain a reasonable quality of life.
