I was an inpatient at Banner Desert Hospital in Mesa AZ from April 3 through April 7, 2014 for a hand injury. I gave the clerk in the ER my insurance information before being admitted. On April 5th after 2 days in the hospital and had been seen by several different doctors and PA’s, I was seen for about 3 minutes by a Dr. Yang of Arizona Hand Surgeons. I was never told that this provider was not contracted with Aetna. I assumed since they worked with the hospital that they would accept my insurance and was never told differently. Had I been told they were an out of network provider, I would have refused his services as there was no need at that point for him to consult with me anyway. My wound was healing and there was no nerve damage. When I questioned Arizona Hand Surgeons about the insurance decline for the visit, they told me that there were no other doctors on call. I have to differ with that. I was in the hospital for a total of 5 days and was seen by 3 other doctors for my hand. They may or may not have been hand specialists per se but there was no need for a specialist anyway. I am sure that within those 5 days there was a doctor who was contracted with Aetna who could have seen me if necessary. At the very least I should have been given an opportunity to decide for myself whether a hand surgeon was required since I would have to pay for it out of my own pocket. I was not given this choice or information at all. Although my insurance paid this visit as in patient, the usual and customary charge by AZ Hand Surgeons was more than 6 times this amount and they refuse to discount any of the charge. I feel this was an error on Banner’s part by calling in this doctor who was not in my network without informing me of such and not allowing me to decide to have him see me or not. I was not given this option and was actually on the schedule for surgery for 4-6 and 4-7 but was doing better so I didn’t have to have the surgery. Can you imagine what my out of network cost would have been if this doctor would have done surgery on my hand? I doubt I still would have been informed that my insurance would not pay this. But at 6 times the normal charge I am sure it would have ended up to be more than my total in network hospital bills. Thank goodness I only had this 3 minute office visit. They wanted me to make a follow up appointment and I am so very glad I did not do that. By allowing this to happen, Banner is allowing these doctors to scam their patients in thus is themselves scamming. Look at their reviews on Google and Yelp. I am not the first one that they scammed. Do you want to be affiliated with this kind of scam? I wouldn’t think so.

One Of The Worste Experiences!!

Everv time I have come to this or any of the ither Banner Hospitals the doctors could care less about me or my comfort, Most all of the nurses are the same and never check in on you to see if you sre comfortable!!

Received bill 108% higher than market rates, I was told they didn't care if I died.

by J Swansen , 11/08/2012

After an emergency visit to the Emergency Department, I received a bill that was 108% higher for the exact same billing codes compared to an E.D. visit three months prior at a different, nearby hospital. When I called Banner's billing office, I spoke to a representative whose initials are G.M.L. I asked her why their prices are so much higher than fair market value for the area. She replied by saying that it was "my decision" to go to Banner Desert. I informed her that because of my location and physical symptoms during the emergency, I had no choice but to go to there. During the visit, the E.D. physician said that I had about 10 minutes before I would have been in a coma. She replied again that it was my decision to go to Banner Desert instead of the other hospital. When I told her that that hospital was more than 25 minutes away, she again repeated that it was my decision. I asked her to clarify that she thought it was a "choice" that I either die or go to Banner Desert, and she said "yes." I couldn't believe what I had heard, that someone (let alone a hospital employee) would tell me point blank that they couldn't care less whether I had lived or died.

Banner Desert's NO.1 for this Michigan Snowbird

by Gary C. , 11/07/2012

From the ER to housekeeping many thanks to all who cared for me and cared about me. It was less than 24 hours from diagnosis to surgery. At all times I was apprised as to what procedure was needed and what the prognosis may be. Now 13 days after surgery all is back to normal and honestly I have had colds that were more of a discomfort. Wishing you all continued success in your endeavors. Our Best To All GOC &NKC

I went to BANNER DESERT EMERGENCY ROOM one night when I developed numb fingers, fever, chills and back pain. I explained to the staff and brought my med, that 4 days ago I developed a bump on my leg and was taking antibiotics. I also told them my Dr. stated it could be antibiotic resistant. I was given IV morphine for the pain and tests were run. Dr. Michael Maxwell came in the room and told me it was my Heart. He stated that blood was running through my body and if not repaired I will be dead within 12 hours. Drugged up and by myself I didn't know what to do. I was raised to always trust dr.'s . I frantically called family, this was the middle of the night and I could not reach anyone to help. So they took me into surgery. {Heart repair surgery} I woke up in ICU with the Dr. Michael Maxwell standing over me stating "WE MADE A MISTAKE, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR HEART" WTF! Tubes coming out of my neck, mouth, arms, and stomach. Now i'm in kidney failure from the contrast they g

The doctors didnt have a chart made for me, so they didnt even know what any other nurse had given me. They asked me what a previous nurse had done because they didnt know, but then argued with me over it. AND DOUBLE DOSED ME WITH MEDS. they dont even give you a bed or room to relax in, you spend your whole trip walking from chair to chair that they send you too. I had 2 doctors tell me i was prob. just depressed and not sick, RANDOM, without even loking at my chart. RUDE STAFF, noone there is compassionate. If they would have looked up my charts they would have seen ive been in and out of hospitals with the same problems since i was 13. i am now 21. The symptoms are worse and almost completely overwhelming. I am now at home still suffering and not feeling any better. This place should seriously be shut down.

unlawfully held against will

by srth , 01/27/2011

I took my baby to the ER she had a fever of 100.5. They admitted her to the hospital and insisted on doing a spinal tap, which is risky. When I refused CPS was called on me. They also insisted on keeping her for 48 hours after the spinal tap treating her with strong antibiotics, until the tests returned negative. They would not let me leave with my child for a second opinion. They stated I was not free to take my child and leave the hospita. They unlawfully imprisoned my child against her and my will.

This hospital doesn't work with patients on billing arrangements

by notahappycamper , 01/20/2011

This hospital's billing dept. is ridiculous when it comes to making payment arrangements with the patient. I've sent small payments to other healthcare facilities until the bill is paid. Not so with Banner!! They expect a large bill to be paid in a matter of months!! They want over $100 each month as the MINIMUM or else it goes to collections!! Based on this, I'm quite sure they send A LOT of their patients to collections. Make some other hospital your first choice and avoid Banner Desert.
