Before you sign call your local building department
How to make sure you're getting a licensed roofing company and with the right insurance.
You can call the building department or go online, place cursor on contractors tab, a drop down list will appear, click on search by name or license type. There are two ways to check either by name of company or by license type.
How to search by name:
To search by name -- type company name in (Enter all or part of a name to find box). Example: Aspen Roofing -- Will bring up two names: Aspen Roofing & Chimney, Inc., which we are not affiliated with at all, and us Aspen Roofing, Inc., 5003 Half Moon Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80915
You will see at the far right started (obtained our license) 8/20/1993 and when our license expires 8/31/current year
You will find this information on all roofing companies, with the license renewing yearly.
How to check insurance information listed below
How to search by license type:
This way will get a list of every roofing contractor that are licensed in El Paso County
Click drop down list for (Search by Type) click on building
Another drop down list (Select) Specialty (D) that is the license all roofing contractors carry
Another drop down list (Select) Single Trade
Another drop down list (Select) Roofing
Any roofing contractor showing in red have an expired license and we do not suggest using
Find the companies that you’re looking at; look at (Started date) their licenses and when it expires; double click on company to check out their insurance information.
Example of our company -- Our liability insurance is with American Family Insurance and our workman's compensation policy is with Pinnacol, showing the dates that these policies renew.
If you find companies that have a "letter to exempt" in the worker’s comp. area this means that they do not carry workman's compensation insurance. They are exempt as owners of the company only, which means they are not suppose to have employees, and the owner him/herself do all the work or they hire subcontractors and most likely are not insured with worker's compensation. If you should hire a company that does not carry worker's comp; you could be liable should someone get injured while working on your roof. Liability insurance only covers your home for damage and does not cover the worker(s). You can request that their insurance company’s list you as additional insured. Ask that the insurance company mails, fax, or emails that information to you directly from the insurance company. Do not let them hand you a paper that shows insurance information, anyone can doctor the information.
We also suggest calling the BBBSC - Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado to find out if they have any unresolved complaints, or go online. Its one thing to have a complaint that has been resolved and both parties have come to an agreement to correct issues vs. a company that hasn’t responded to a customer’s complaint.
No one should ask for up front money, please do not pay up front money!
