If you call Anytime Fitness to ask for their monthly fees to join, they refuse to give this information to you over the phone. They say that it is their "policy" to have you come in, take a look at all they have to offer, and then they'll spring the monthly fee information on you once you're face-to-face. I explained that I am on a fixed budget and will not take off work to come in for a tour of a facility when the bottom line is that if I cannot afford it, I cannot afford it no matter if they hand me gold each time I walk through the door. The employee still chose to not give me the information after several requests to provide it, so I chose not to go to tour the facility at all and therefore I toured and joined a gym that did give me the membership fee amounts over the phone. I did make a formal complaint to the corporate headquarters about this ineffective policy. I think that it's poor business to refuse to give a customer information about pricing if they repeatedly request it AND specifically state that they are on a fixed budget. I can understand suggesting the potential customer to come in, but FORCING the face-to-face high-stress situation tactics that gyms are known to deploy is an idea I reject. I'd never go to a restaurant where I didn't know how much a steak would be until after I had ordered. Surprise... the steak you picked from the menu is $50! Same scenario here.
