City of Burien in Washington was incorporated in 1993, and has various departments to provide a wide range of facilities and services to the residents. Its building division issues building, sign, mechanical, plumbing and electrical permits. The community relations and human resources department is responsible for city clerk services that include council minutes and agendas, public records, notary services, business, pet and special activities licenses, and multifamily housing licenses. The department is also responsible for public relations, legislative policies and priorities, and human resources. The city additionally has a parks and recreation department that maintains parks and recreation facilities, and facilitates leisure opportunities for all citizens. Its public works department is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the city's transportation and storm water facilities, and implementing the city council-approved capital improvement program by providing engineering, project management and technical services.
